Every year, world blindness eradication week is celebrated from February 27 to March 5, I am penning a few lines with reference to this day and the conditions of the lives of those who are affected with blindness or eye related problems because Patanjali Yogpeeth has put a step forward in this direction.
Around three and half crore blind people are there in the whole world out of which around one crore thirty lakh are in India and are totally blind. Another 40 thousand are partially blind. More than three crore forty lakh people do not have eyesight and majority of them require cornea transplant. Around 83 per cent of the people are suffering from cataract but only 13 lakh operations are being done annually. The number of cataract patients is increasing and is more than eight lakh.
Lot of work is being done under the national blind control program in India but it is not sufficient. Many non-government organizations are also doing this work. An eye medical and research department has been setup in Patanjali Yogpeeth under the able guidance of revered Swami Ramdev Ji Maharaj in order to accomplish the mission of ‘Healthy India Healthy World.’ Research will be carried on in this department along with eye surgery. Patanjali Yogpeeth aims at curing eye diseases through Ayurvedic method along with eye testing. Sophisticated and world-class modern equipments are used in this department for the treatment of various diseases.
Sushrut Sanhita is considered to be a very authentic work in Ayurved. Saint Sushrut has given a detailed description about the structure of eye, its various parts, 76 types of eye diseases, its symptoms, and treatment in chapters titled ‘Aupdravik Adhyay’ to ‘Nayanamighat Pratishedhak.’ Some new books have also been written on eye diseases, which gives a comparative analysis of old and new subjects. Talking about eye treatment in the 18th chapter titled, ‘Kriya Kalpa,’ it has been said,
‘tarpanam putashakasca seka ascayotanajjane’ in other words washing, fomentation, pouring eye drops, applying kajal and using drugs prepared in closed vessel are beneficial in the treatment of eye diseases.
The eye department of Patanjali Yogpeeth has sufficient facilities for the treatment of eye diseases with Ayurvedic method and also to conduct research on eyes. Eyes get affected due to irregular and uncontrolled life style. The formation of eyes is minute and complete. Eyes work properly only till such time that they are free from any kind of diseases. However, Anulom-Vilom is also very useful for maintaining good health of the eyes. Regular use of eye drops ‘Drishti’ manufactured in ashram is also beneficial for eyes. A person who uses these eye drops and practices Anulom- Vilom pranayam does not require spectacles.
Patanjali Yogpeeth has made a beginning in eradicating blindness, your cooperation in the direction of opening new vistas in the treatment of eye diseases would be appreciated.
