Travel medications

Hi Bee

I will be travelling to India with my family in March, for 3 months. I have

just been to the travel doctor to discuss all the pills and potions he

suggests.

My hubby and I have already had a look at the malaria medications and

decided to only take them if we actually get malaria, rather than taking

them for 3 months as a preventative (as they are antibiotic based).

The doctor suggested Diamox for altitude sickness and Dukoral which is meant

to prevent bacterial diarrhea. Im not sure about either of these products.

Diamox seems to me " harmless " - and by that I mean that it does not have

long term effects and I don't understand fully how it functions in the body.

I did ask my doctor how it works but other than a pat answer about it being

a diuretic he was not able to explain any further.

Dukoral is supposed to be a vaccine for bacterial diarrhea. If we don't take

the vaccine and do get this bacterial infection we will need to take

antibiotics, and I don't want to do that either. Having said that last time

we travelled to Asia (for about half the time that we are going this time),

we didn't get sick once. We were very careful about where and when we ate

and all went well, so we could try our luck again.

I suppose I just wanted to get your ideas on these two medications, if you

have any. I will keep investigating.

Thanks in advance for considering this matter. I know you are not a doctor

and we will be following this up further with doctors and other

professionals . I just wanted to see if you have heard anything negative

about these products.
