The first compounds for treating hypoT were made from dried sheep thyroids, back in the 1890s. By the time the synthetic formula was developed in the 1930s, they were using both beef and pork thyroids. The difficulty in standardizing these preparations was one of the prime motives for switching to synthetics. Since the dessicated glands had already been " proven " for many years, the synthetic (Synthroid) was grandfathered in as a prescription medication. It was never patented. They have since learned to control the T4 and T3 concentrations in the dessicated glandular products, but many doctors are still prejudiced against them because of the earlier problems. Guest guest
Well, as far as the diabetes, before they had a repeatable test it wasn't even called an illness, but rather a syndrome which is a collection of symptoms for which they don't have a test. As far back as I can remember my mother was on thyroid medication and it was Armour. It's the oldest thyroid medication. Synthroid, I believe was started in the 60s or 70s. <>Roni Immortality exists! I just know I remember hearing that they would get it from pigs thyroids. So did they actually give people a little of the pig thyroid to eat? Just curious as I was thinking about that. If that's what they did...how did they judge how much to give if you couldn't check levels? My friend and I were talking about her son with diabetes and how did they used to get insulin or test blood etc. So it got me thinking about this. Does anyone know? I don't even know how to look that up online.
