Guest guest
Hi Emma, Hoping this finds you before you head off to the docs, it was left a bit late and we're probably the only ones still up!! Look in the files and there is alist of hypo signs and symptoms, tick them off and tell the new doc that despite being on meds for years you still have these symptoms.... Ask for your free t4 and TSH to be measured along with the free t3. Either you are not converting the t4 (thyroxine) which is a storage hormone, into T3 - the useable stuff, and are converting it into reverse t3 instead, which is what happens when you need to just get rid of the excess t4, or you're converting ok but the cells are resistant. reasons for non conversion and / or resistance are Lack of selenium, low B12, low folate, Low Iron, low ferritin (sored iron) low vit D, low zinc or copper. they all need investigation as if any one of these is low in the body, then that's the thyroid meds stuffed up.... If the doctor doesn't want to know, be insistant and tell him you cannot wait any longer than you have been doing and that his job is to make you well or find someone who will. You could mention a trial of T3....? The dosage rate of T3, is that for every 80 mcg of Throxine you knock off, you replace it with 20 mcg t3. Good Luck! He might be great! x > > Hi Its currently nearly 1am in the UK and I have a doctors appointment today at 9.30am in our totally new doctors with a new gp. > As some of you may be aware I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism in 2003 and fibromyalgia in 2004. > I am currently taking 500mcgs of thyroxine. > I have not had a " normal " thyroid reading in all this time. > Since being diagnosed I have gained over 7 stones in weight (nearly 100 pounds) despite being on less then 1000 calories a day and walking everywhere. > I feel as though my body is shutting down now. > I am struggling every day is a battle. Guest guest
Hi Emma, Since you are thirsty all the time it would be worth doing a simple self-test for diabetes. If you are eating so little the NHS tests might not pick up on it, particularly if it is a low carb diet. You can test yourself by getting stix from the chemist. Test in the urine stream before and for 3 hours after drinking a medium sized bottle of lucozade. Follow the instructions on the stix. If it is a positive result then you can report that to your doctor. The symptoms of diabetes are very similar to those of low thyroid, and poor control of blood sugar levels will interfere with attempts to correct the thyroid problems. Guest guest
Hi, Emma. Good luck with getting any kind of effective treatment for hypothyroidism under the socialist medical system in the UK if you don't happen to fit the " mold " that the majority of patients apparently fall into. A number of points: 500 mcg is IMHO a pretty darn large dose [mine is 75 mcg/day; on the low side]. I'd suggest you talk to Roni on this list and get the list of tests needed to rule out an RT3 problem. Then try to convince your doctors to run those tests and post the results here [be sure to include the ranges]. Guest guest
This will be too late for you to speak with your doctor, but anyway, I have found that under such circumstances that you find yourself in right now, it is best to write to your doctor and ask him to put your letter of requests into your medical notes. Send a copy also to the head of practice. First, in your letter, list all of the symptoms you are suffering with now, and the signs you are showing (these are things your doctor can see for himself). You can check these against those in our web site www.tpa-uk.org.uk under 'Hypothyroidism'. Next, take your basal temperature BEFORE you get out of bed in a morning for 4 or 5 days and list these. Anything under 97.8 is an indication you still have a low metabolism and this could be because your body is not getting the thyroid hormone replacement it needs. Next, list the blood tests you need checking to see if any of them are low in the reference range. These are ferritin, vitamin B12, vitamin D3, magnesium, folate, copper and zinc. Tell the GP in the letter that if any of these are low in the reference range, your thyroid hormone will not be able to get absorbed fully into your cells. Next, ask for a FULL thyroid function test that will include TSH, free T4 and free T3. This is because you need to know whether the thyroxine is converting into the active thyroid hormone T3. Every cell in your body and brain needs T3 to function. Tell him that thyroxine (T4) is a prohormone with little activity. It must convert through the liver, kidneys and 100's of other thyroid hormone receptors throughout the body into the active T3. There is a large minority of sufferers of the symptoms of hypothyroidism who are unable to convert for many and varied reasons, and these people need some form of T3, either synthetic or natural. Next, ask for a referral to an endocrinologist of your choice. You do not have to be referred to the one in your area. Also, you don't need referring to one who has a specialty in diabetes and who knows little about the functioning of the thyroid gland. Next, ask for your letter to be placed into your medical notes and send a copy to the Head of Practice. Keep a copy yourself just in case your letter 'accidentally goes missing' and make sure it is dated. Doctors take a lot more notice of letters than face to face consultations with their patients - which they can deny ever took place. Luv - Sheila Can anyone advise me what to say and do at the new appointment today?. I have never had a sympathetic dr at all, they never help me with my weight and breathlessness issues and I am very thirsty now all the time. whereas I never used to drink liquids a lot. just a few sips here and there. Please help as I feel this is my last chance to get something done. Thanks Emma
Guest guest
Sheila, this letter is really useful and I'm going to crib from it in preparation for a doctor's appointment I have tomorrow! Good luck to you, Emma.
