I think you already nailed it. Ice for the first day to dull the pain

and inhibit the inflammation response. Later, heat to relax muscle

spasms and promote healing. Not moving around helps with the spasms, too.

I think naproxen (Aleve, Naprosyn) is the currently most popular NSAID

for strained muscles and tendons. OTC is 220 mg, while the prescription

version is more likely to be 500 mg twice a day. I took it recently for

a groin pull induced by yard work. I'm getting too old to rake leaves. :)

I hope he does not need the drug and recovers quickly.
