I'm certainly not at the top either. The sad fact is that our present

system often punishes most those most deserving of our help and provides

the most " help " to those better able to take care of themselves except

for the entitlements liberals dangle before them.

Roni, I think I may have shared some of my history here; if so sorry for

the repetition:

1] I never lived in a house with running water until I was an adult;

2] I never lived in a house with a bathroom until I was an adult;

3] I lived in houses without electricity for much of my youth;

4] I never visited a dentist until I could earn the money to pay my bill;

5] As the result of [4] I have less than half of my natural teeth;

6] I watched my dad pull my grandmother's teeth with a pair of Klines

when I was a child. As a young adult I pulled my upper right wisdom

tooth with a pair of channel lock pliers;

7] I was the oldest child of an alcoholic share cropper, with 5

siblings. Months passed without meat on the table. I remember biscuits

made with lard, flour and water along with brown gravy made with lard,

flour and water for months on end for breakfast.

And on and on... Just to suggest that it's probably not necessary to

educate me about the negatives of poverty. Been there/done that.

Regards,

I did know your history. However, by whatever means you were able to use you

were able to build a life for yourself. There are millions of others though that

couldn't and can't. Illness, disability,

mental problems, abuse, etc impact way more lives than we would like to

acknowledge.

I've been out of the country and seen poverty that is way worse than here in the

states, but that still doesn't mean that everyone here is able to do what you

did. You are to be commended for your accomplishments, but that doesn't mean

that the ones that couldn't are to be demeaned.

Roni, I can say with the utmost sincerity that nothing I've ever written

has had the intent of demeaning you or anyone else who through no fault

of their own find themselves in dire straits. It happens, and deserves

our compassion and help. Further, if somehow I've given you the

impression that I'm even close to wealthy I'd like to correct that. My

income is from social security plus a pension which is a lot less than

that. One of my assets is my employee-paid health insurance, for which

I worked 37 years. My car [mini van] is over 10 years old with well

over 100,000 miles. I do live in a large house in an up-scale

neighborhood but it needs a lot of repairs [that I can't afford]; and

the mortgage consumes almost half of my after-tax income. Still my

situation is vastly greater than some/many, and I manage to eat out a

lot. An extravagance that I no doubt should eliminate; but I really

enjoy it.

There will always be those who fall through the cracks and cannot help

it, and we should help them. OTOH making any group of able-bodied

people into a welfare class is IMHO about the worst thing we can do to

them. Once any of us come to think that we are entitled to the fruits

of the efforts of others we tend to become pretty much useless in

providing for ourselves.

The steps for most people when they are young to take to avoid poverty

are well known:

1] Finish school; go to college if possible/practical;

2] Don't have kids until you are married and number one above is complete;

3] Get a job and keep it, at least until you can find something better.

4] Avoid debt for most things as much as possible; probably a mortgage

and car payment would be the exceptions...

That's just my list; I think others have different ones and that's okay.

I don't buy lottery tickets but I'd really like to win it. I know of so

many people and causes where a few thousand dollars could make such a

difference in people's lives.
