Guest guest
I continued to play football and other sports for 16 yrs before i was diagnosed with my thyroid problem. You can still lead a normal life (seen from the point of view of others), it is just that you are tired all the time and the quality of life is very low. i kept going back to the doctors in the first 5 yrs saying there was something wrong with my hormones and so they tested me and everything was fine. i was just depressed and had to work out a way of getting better based around that diagnosis - nothing helped. i am very surprised thyroid hormone is seen as doping in professional sport. Again shows ignorance. > > Anyone heard about the footballer o? He has an underactive thyroid and was diagnosed four years ago, but he wasn't allowed to take thyroid hormone because it was considered a form of doping! I imagine that it must be T3 that they objected to, as I know bodybuilders use T3 for cutting. > > I think it's pretty amazing that he managed to carry on for four years without any thyroid hormone. I also think it's really sad that people made fun of his weight. > > http://www.dawn.com/2011/02/14/brazil-football-legend-ronaldo-retires.html >
Guest guest
I've just left the following on the web link.... dunno if it will be approved, but we can hope..... x " Taking thyroid hormones which replace the hormones the thyroid is not making, is not `doping' it is necessary. Without them he must have felt dreadful and the weight obviously piled on. If he wants to learn, he's welcome to come over to the Thyroid Patient Advocacy website and forum, where he will receive sensible opinions, from people who are learning to manage their health. Many of us have no interest in football, so he's safe " > > http://www.dawn.com/2011/02/14/brazil-football-legend-ronaldo-retires.html >
Guest guest
It certainly disproves the theory that all we need is more exercise to lose the weight. Lilian
Guest guest
Marsaday1971 - Yes, he said that he was in constant pain for the past four years. People think we hypo people are 'normal' because a lot of our symptoms don't show on the outside; except of course the weight - which society judges us for. The frustrating thing though, is that according to my bf he was teased about his weight for years, so obviously the hypothyroidism had been brewing for a long time. Then, when it was finally diagnosed four years ago he wasn't allowed to take any thyroid! I think thyroid hormone is seen as doping because T3 can stimulate the metabolism. Euthyroid bodybuilders actually cycle T3 with steroids for the purpose of getting 'the perfect body'. Still, I am surprised that it is actually banned when you consider the amount of people who actually NEED thyroid hormone! Surely if a doc was willing to diagnose hypothyroidisim it was obviously needed. Sigh... - excellent post there! Lilian - You are so right on. It's not about exercise - it's about metabolism. If the body is working correctly, fat is burned off. o certainly didn't live a sendentary lifestyle!
Guest guest
Another celebrity has been diagnosed with hypothyroidism. It always helps to bring more knowledge into the open about people with thyroid conditions. My mother still assumes I'm down at Macs every day for lunch - even though it's a 70km drive!
