When the supposed operation of any proposed mechanism is contradicted by

the most basic laws of physics we can be reasonably confident that they

are also imaginary.  On a very basic level we all probably have at least

some understanding of this.  If I were to tell you I can levitate  the

White House up into orbit without the use of any physical mechanism then

you would know I'm blowing smoke.  That is because you have sufficient

grasp of the laws of gravitation to know that it is impossible. 

Scientists have a similar grasp of more esoteric laws of nature that you

or I might not understand.  So they can know as surely as you know that

I cannot orbit the white house that many quack products are exactly that.
