Guest guest
Eileen, I was so happy to read your email today! I'm glad you and your husband stuck to your guns and forced the issue with your doctor. I don't think you will ever be sorry that you are going ahead with the helmet therapy. Hopefully someone here will have used the same product that Frazier is going to have, if not I can tell you that we used a locally made helmet (which is what it sounds like you will be using) and we had good luck with it. Make sure you get a chance to really sit down and talk with the orthotist before getting Frazier fitted. He/she should thoroughly explain how the helmet will re-shape the head and give you details on cleaning, removing and putting it on. He/she should also explain what to do if you get red or pink spots, etc. The key to a good experience is a good orthotist who will work with you and make sure you understand the entire process. So glad to hear that you are on the road to a rounder head! I hope you will stick with us and share your experience with us along the way. Best of luck to you, Frazier and your family. Guest guest
Hello all, want to give a quick run down on our visit to the neuro. Was disappointed with Dr., without pictures or anything he looked at Fraziers head and said " Oh this looks much better " It has been a month since we were there and he specifically remembers his head shape? I didn't fall for it, I know this doctor is against banding. He knew obviously why we were there, since I moved the appt. up by a month because in our eyes we have seen no change. I tried to ask questions and told him that I have learned a lot on the internet, his answer to that was " I hate the internet " . He reminded us that this is all purely cosmetic, yet he realized Frazier still favors one side so he did give us a perscription to see a Physical Therapist for neck exercises. Then he finally admitted that he thinks he would benefit from it, but still insists there is no evidence that his head will be any different with or without it. I am not crazy about this guy, every time I tried to ask a question he cut me off, didn't help that I had larengitis (spelling?) Anyway at the end, my husband asked him what he would do if it was his child, His answer " That's not a fair question " Anyway, to end it all we did wind up going downstairs to Lawall Prosthetics and got him casted after all, My husband stayed with him while that happened, I am very sick with ear infections and a terrible cold (I think from all the worry over this)and stayed with our daughter outside during it, better that way for me, I would not have enjoyed it. He adores his Daddy and did well and it was over in 5 minutes. Now can anyone tell me about Lawall Prosthetics, apparently they make helmets called ORTHOMEDICS, does anyone know anything about this type. Any info will help. Thank you all for helping me reach this final decision, I feel better already and know it was the right decision. We have to wait 2-3 weeks and in the meantime we will hear from our insurance (Personal Choice) so keep your fingers crossed for us. The neuro did dx him with torticollis so maybe that will help with the insurance battle??? We just don't know. Have a terrific weekend everyone and thank you all again!!! Guest guest
-Eileen, Do a search in the upper right of the page. Just put in Lawall. There were moms from several months back that used Lawall at Dupont. If you do this their posts should come up. Guest guest
Eileen, I haven't had a chance to respond to your other posts but I have been following along. It's amazing how incredibly insensitive some physicians are; a big part of their position is compassion and I'm just not seeing it with parents of children with this condition. I'm glad that you went ahead with casting and you seem to have reconciled your mixed emotions. I just want you to know that it is perfectly reasonable not to want to see Frazier in a band/helmet I was nervous about it all the up until and through the first day Corey wore his! But he adjusted so quickly, the second day he was wearing it 23 hours and had no trouble sleeping (that was the hardest part for me, putting him down at night) It's been five weeks today and I already see an improvement in the back of is head. Good luck to you and your family and I hope you feel better soon! , Corey's mommy (DOC 5/4/01) frazleen@... wrote: > Hello all, want to give a quick run down on our visit to the neuro. > Was disappointed with Dr., without pictures or anything he looked at > Fraziers head and said " Oh this looks much better " It has been a > month since we were there and he specifically remembers his head > shape? Guest guest
Hi Eileen, You had a big day and you will look back and be glad you did this. Once you get the helmet and Frazier starts correcting you'll be like us recommending it to others. This is a emotional roller coaster but it does get easier once you are using it and familar with it. Dont worry about Frazier, its alot harder on the parents. Children adapt and their personality shines through. Mackenzie liked her helmet and it even grew on me too. Plan how you are going to decorate it and have all the supplies ready for when you come home with the helmet, then it wont look too medical and its fun to do. Your craftyness will be put to the test. We did stickers. I think a football helmet with football stickers is good for a boy. Especially as the football season is approaching. They have those stickers at the sports store and they are more gluey than the regular stickers from the craft store. They are for cars i think. Guest guest
Hi Eileen! Way to go getting Frazier casted so soon! My nuero was the same way, before stepping fully into the room he told us that the twins' heads looked so much better after one month. Hmmm...he must have had x-ray vision to see through me to get a look at Danny's noggin! And when we asked him what he would do if it were his child, he just kind of stepped around the issue. Anyway, I'm just so happy for you that you have gotten to this point! I have never heard of Orthomedics. We also use Lawall, who uses the STARband. The STARband is made by a company called Orthomerica, which sounds very similar...especially when you're suffering from ear infections! By the way, I'm sorry to hear how sick you are! I totally agree that it is probably from all this worrying, stress weakens the immune system. Heres hoping to quick recovery! Ok, now back on track! I just wanted to let you know that I have had nothing but good experiences with Lawall. I know I don't go to the same office as you, but I have met both Harry Lawall Sr and Jr(Bud). I think the practice is pretty much in the sons hands now, and he has been making the helmets for 20 years. I hope you get to meet Bud, he is very nice. Even when he has a waiting room full of patients he always sits down and talks with me. All of the employees at this office act as if they are one big family and I love going to see them every 3 weeks. Plus it doesn't hurt that I think Bud is a nice piece of eye candy! (Hey Kendra, I know you saw that coming!) I hope whatever office you go to, whether its at DuPont or Newtown Square, you have as nice an experience with this company as I am having. Good luck Eileen! Take care of yourself and get better soon!
