Guest guest
Oh Marci so sorry to hear has to have tubes-what a scary experience. My sisters boy was a year old when he got his and they put him under-she demanded they do it at the hospital and not the Drs. office. He loves the water as well so she put the moldable ear plugs in his ears-made of wax and he wears a bathing cap. He was not thrilled with the cap but he got used to and she had very little water problems. Good luck. beck
Guest guest
Beck, Thanks for the reply to the water issue. I'm probably more worried about that than anything else at this point!! The group has really eased my mind about the procedure and I think I am convinced that I want it done at the hospital. Now I'm worried that she won't be able to get in the water which will make her completely miserable!! I will try the plugs and swimcap, but she probably won't like it and she's too little to explain it to her!! :-( :-( Thanks for your input!! Guest guest
Marci, I know lots of people are telling you tubes are great and not to worry--I agree! Just wanted to add a couple things: two of my four kiddos have had tubes. My oldest was 4 when she got them and we did it under general anesthesia. However, when the tubes hadn't fallen out by the time she was 6, our ENT removed them in the office. I was freaked out at that but they gave her something to make her " loopy " and it was no big deal. (I realize out is different than in, though.) The other thing I wanted to say was yes, you have to keep their ears dry while they have tubes. We have tried those waxy earplug things but I don't think they work well. What was great was that our first ENT did molds of 's ears--a silly putty type material that they put in her ear and they MADE earplugs that completely kept water out. (They somewhat resembled hearing aids.) They were fabulous! I know not all ENT's do them but you could check into it. Good luck! She has terrible trouble with ear infections. She has one now that has been with us since the very beginning of May. We thought it had finally cleared up last week, but the day before yesterday she started back with the runny nose. I took her to the ped yesterday and he said it was time to see the ENT and talk about tubes. For some reason this makes me VERY nervous. Ped said that the ENT could do the procedure in his office or at the hospital. He said that if it was done in office then she would not be put "under". Personally I can't see going through any kind of procedure where she has to be still or where she would have to be awake and restrained. She cries non-stop in the car when she is just strapped into her carseat (no exaggeration!!!). OK, enough rambling - the question is: Has anyone here done the tubes thing and has anyone had them put in without having their baby put "under"? Also, for people who have done the tubes - how old was your baby?I would appreciate any input as I am really fretting over this one. Guest guest
Hey Marci, Sorry to hear may be on her way to tubes; hopefully the results of surgery will be worth the stress. I know everyone has told you already not to worry (but it can't be helped, we all do it) and I hope it has put you at ease a little bit. Ear tube placement in children is the most commonly performed surgery today. Two of my close friends have had tubes for their children and both had better hearing afterwards and improved speech for the one, the other little guy's speech was fine beforehand. In fact, I think his speeech would be even better had they done the surgery sooner, he was 2 1/2 with unbelievable, horrible chronic sinus and ear infections. I would opt for the hospital too. Guest guest
Marci, Just wanted to add my 2 cents about PE tubes. I am a speech language pathologist and have treated many children with delayed language development secondary to chronic ottis. In my experience, PE tubes are a WONDERFUL benefit to these children. The middle ear is made up of an air filled space with three tiney bones that transfer sound to the inner ear. When this area is filled with fluid, the transfer of energy is impeded. The tubes are to normalized this function. Because many children have chronic ottis and by the time you have hearing evaluated the fluid might have cleared, it is often difficult to get true sense of what they are hearing. The wonderful news is once the tubes do their job, and the hearing function normalizes, many children become "chatty cathy". If after the tubes you are still concerned about 's speech development, have her evaluated by a therapist who will teach you lots of great language stimulation techniques. You can either go through your insurance or through an early intervention program in your county. Check out the American Speech & Hearing Assoc. (ASHA) web site (www.asha.org) for lots of great links. Good Luck with all. Hope this e-mail was helpful. Staci & Adam PS Our neurosurgeon appointment is tomorrow.......we are sooooo anxious!
