Sheila Reynolds says the air quality at Nixon Elementary in Hiawatha--located on the north edge of Cedar Rapids--has worsened her ten-year-old son's asthma. Reynolds was one of about 20 parents who attended a briefing yesterday by the Indoor Air Quality Committee, which has been meeting for more than a year to address mold and air quality concerns at Nixon. Dave Dvorak, manager of buildings and grounds for Cedar Rapids schools, says mold found at the school that had grown over the summer has been neutralized and mold in ceiling insulation will be removed over the Thanksgiving holiday break.
