Heritage resumes classes after mold problem

MARYVILLE - Heritage High School reopened as planned Monday after being

closed for mold abatement.

Students received an unexpected vacation after the school was closed for 20

days. The Blount County Board of Education was told Sept. 3 that of 22 rooms

tested, three were positive for mold.

W.C. " Bud " Helton and Associates were hired to do a study after some

students reported health problems.

Helton said molds affect some people more than others. He said one reason

for the buildup was the school system's efforts to cut costs by lowering

heating and air conditioning when school was not in session. That allowed

moisture to collect, causing mold to develop, he said.

Carpet and ceiling tile in the affected areas were replaced.

Principal Vandy Kemp said school officials will continue to monitor the

situation. School officials said they will look at all schools for possible

mold.
