More Air Quality Issues At Chavez?

School District Spends Thousands This Year On Testing

October 14, 2002

MADISON, Wis. -- More concerns over the air quality at Chavez School this

year has prompted the school district to spend thousands of dollars to test

it.

So far, they say nothing has been found.

The school district spent more than $1.5 million last year to fix a mold

problem, but News 3 has learned they are still getting complaints. However,

officials told News 3 there is no problem.

" Do I feel the building is in good shape, in good condition and a very

healthy environment? Yes, I do, " said Price, assistant superintendent

for the district.

Officials have conducted seven separate air quality tests since the school

has reopened, each in response to separate concerns or complaints. Some

Chavez staff members have taken their issues to the principal.

" Some of them have been air flow whether air has been flowing in there. Some

have been in response to, you know, some of respiratory distress that

they've had, " said Fried, Chavez principal.

District officials continue to insist there are no problems and calls a

recent water leak in the cafeteria a " maintenance " issue. They also said an

air-handling system no longer under warranty is working properly, but admit

there has been a problem with high humidity.

" Yes, there's been some times that have been tough and everybody, I think,

had some humidity or some condensation on the windows. The last couple weeks

as we've had a lot of rain and moisture, " Price said.

A new report says officials continue to monitor the air quality in certain

areas of the building with a portable machine. To date, no problems have

been detected, officials said.

A state expert said the district has done everything reasonably necessary to

rid the school of mold contaminants.
