A good research site is epa.gov

they have researched the use of ozone machines and ionizers in the home.

they also have a good report on the issue of cleaning your ducts.

If you can't find the links, contact me.

I have a powerful ozone generator (Rainbow 400) of the type hotels use to clear smoke smell from rooms.

This produces lots of ozone, and not so much ions. Ionizers produce lots of ions and varying amounts of ozone.

Ozone breaks down organic molecules (like smoke and mold byproducts ) through oxidation.

Ions cause particulates to precipitate (usually stick to the walls). I don't think Ions really do anything to combat mold. They are suppose to make you feel better, but everything in moderation.

My personal opinion on mold and the use of ozone is to vacate the area, then hit it hard with a high concentration of ozone (the area should be dried out first, but be careful as dry mold spores can be blown around - so don't leave your furnace fan running). Then, air out the area before re-inhabiting it.

I don't think it's healthy to have a constant, low level ozone machine going. Remember, ozone is an oxidizer - what to try to avoid by taking all that vitamin c anti-oxidant. Low level ions are apparently safe, and might prevent the mold spores from drifting through the air.

There is debate about ozone, but I do use mine occasionally. There are protocols for scrubbing down walls and grout with bleach, washing soda, borax (anti mold) before you dry the area and ozone it. see the epa and also Care2.com., a great site for non-toxic cleaning techniques. After cleanup, the key is to keep the area dry. For example, in my bathroom, I towel down the walls and tub after every shower, then run a fan at my shower curtain for about 30 minutes. This works like a charm, plus I never have to clean it. I eliminated the shower curtain liner - it is unnecessary. i just have the outer curtain which is polyester and somewhat porous so it dries quickly

Subject: [] Aranizer anyone?

Has anyone has used Aranizer for cleaning up mold, VOC, etc in the air? Is there any health risk in using a negative ion generator like this?mtFAIR USE NOTICE:This site contains copyrighted material the use of which has not always been specifically authorized by the copyright owner.
