Notice of Public Hearing

November 14, 2002

The Boston City Council's Committee on Education and School Matters will hold a public hearing on Monday, December 2, 2002 at 4:00 P.M.  The hearing will be held in the A. Iannella Chambers on the 5th floor of Boston City Hall.  The subject of the hearing is:

· Docket  #1271 - Order for hearing to have School Department officials explain why they have not been adhering to the terms of the 1996 Air Quality Ordinance that was developed to ensure the health and safety of those spending time in public school buildings.

The matter was sponsored by Councillors Chuck and Yancey and referred to the Committee on Education and School Matters on November 6, 2002.

Members of the public are cordially invited to attend and testify.  If you have not testified at a Council hearing, please arrive five (5) minutes before the call of the hearing to sign up and become familiar with the hearing format, testimony locations, and the sound system.  Please bring fifteen copies of any written documents you wish to present at the hearing.  If you know of others who may be interested in this hearing, please notify them.

Written comments may be made part of the record and available to all Councillors by sending them by fax or mail to arrive before the hearing.  Please use the address below.

ORDER OF COUNCILLORS CHUCK TURNER AND CHARLES C. YANCEY

November 6, 2002

WHEREAS: The 1996 Air Quality Ordinance requires that the Boston School Department inspect each school twice during the year; and

WHEREAS: There have been reports regarding illness arising in schools because of air quality; and

WHEREAS: An article in the Boston Herald indicated that only 55 of the 125 Boston Public School buildings were monitored last year; and

WHEREAS: These inspections are essential to protecting the health and safety of the students, teachers and administrators in the building; THEREFORE BE IT

ORDERED: That a hearing be called by the City Council to have Boston School Department officials explain why they have not been adhering to the terms of the 1996 Air Quality Ordinance that was developed to ensure the health and safety of those spending time in public school buildings.
