Doctor Prezant is a deputy chief medical officer who recently spoke in Rochester at the Asthma Update Conference sponsored by Via Health and the University of Rochester Medical School. Prezant was helping staff a first aid station at Ground Zero when the Twin Towers fell. Everyone who survived was engulfed in black, choking dust. Everyone who responded to the disaster breathed in and swallowed that dust, which was made up of pulverized concrete, glass, carbon and asbestos. The fires that burned on the site for weeks added additional exposure to soot as workers sifted through the rubble. In addition to asthma and allergy symptoms, Prezant says one surprise is that thousands of emergency personnel developed acid reflux disease.
