Mold Keeping Students at Home

Pleasantville, N.J. -November 19, 2002 - Stone is home schooling her

8-year-old son Trevor due to doctor's orders. The 3rd grade honor roll

student has developed asthma that requires regular nebulizer treatments.

Trevor Stone/LEEDS School STUDENT:

" My head was hurting and my stomach was hurting. I felt like I was going to

throw up. "

Trevor's pediatrician reportedly linked his problems to mold at the Leeds

Avenue School in Pleasantville because his condition worsened as the week

progressed.

Stone/PLEASANTVILLE, N.J.:

" You just walk in and see it anywhere you look. I saw a mouse pad covered in

mold. I saw walls in a cabinet, closet door mold. "

's 5-year-old daughter is on twice daily nebulizer treatments

and a steroid for respiratory problems that reportedly flared when she

started kindergarten this fall.

/Pleasantville, N.J. :

" Where my daughter is down in the basement, where most of the mold seems to

be... but it's as high as the third floor. My older two girls have had sore

throats and hives. "

A parent showed Action News this photograph of what looks like mold on a

classroom ceiling and wall. Mold spores are suspected respiratory irritants.

We weren't allowed in with our camera but district representatives met us

outside and told us based on air quality tests, the heating and cooling

system has been cleaned, air purifiers are being placed classes and the roof

will be replaced next year.

/PLEASANTVILLE SCHOOLS:

" We have some health and safety projects to address... roof and drainage. We

think that's the biggest contributor to the mold. "

Ernestine /PLEASANTVILLE Schools:

" We are trying relentlessly to find solutions to help our parents and help

the children. Our 1st priority is our children. "
