Hilton Head school to be tested for mold

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. - Air quality at Hilton Head Elementary School will

be tested next week in response to parents' concerns over possible mold in

the school's ventilation system.

Briggs, executive principal of the 2,200-student elementary school,

sent a letter home with students Friday about the situation.

In the letter, Briggs said the school and district would " take all steps to

ensure the safety and environmental health of our students and staff. "

Beaufort County School District spokesman said tests will be

conducted throughout next week to determine air quality at the school.

After Spartanburg-based AAA Environmental completes its report, the results

will be made public, said.

Mold and mildew in district schools have been a problem in years past. The

school district sued contractors and architects involved in the 1991

construction of Hilton Head Middle School after air-quality problems

surfaced at the school in 1994.

Dehumidifiers were installed in some schools in 1994 to try to combat mold

and mildew.
