Galt mold report to be released, but not until after attorney review

By Ross Farrow/News-Sentinel staff writer

The city of Galt is scheduled to issue within the next few days a report

about the toxic mold found more than a month ago at the Galt Boys and Girls

Club building.

An expert on mold has inspected the city-owned building at Caroline and

Chabolla avenues, but information will not be available until City Attorney

Ruthann Ziegler writes a report for public release about the mold expert's

analysis.

That report is expected in the " next several days, " according to a written

statement issued Tuesday night by the City Council.

The reason for Ziegler to write her own report on the toxic mold problem is

to put a mold expert's analysis in laymen's terms that the community can

understand, City Councilman Tom Malson said.

Mayor Darryl Clare said each of the five City Councilmen received a large

packet of materials for Tuesday's meeting. The consultant's analysis might

be included in the materials, but Clare said Wednesday he hadn't had a

chance to review the materials gave the council.

Much of the materials the council received Tuesday included a history of the

Boys and Girls Club's lease of the building from the city, said Clare and

Vice Mayor Randy Shelton.

In a closed-session meeting Tuesday, the City Council agreed to organize a

joint meeting with the Boys and Girls Club board of directors, tour the

building together and discuss how the mold problem should be handled. The

meeting could take place as early as Friday.

The building was closed Nov. 6 after mold was discovered in the mechanical

area of the building. A preliminary report Nov. 19 indicated that the

building contains two kinds of toxic mold, but it wasn't known whether the

toxins would be a public health danger, City Manager Ted said.

The preliminary report didn't indicate how severe the mold problem is, how

long children and adults may have been exposed to mold, whether any public

health danger exists and how long the building may be closed.

Copies of Ziegler's report will be available at the city clerk's office at

City Hall, 380 Civic Drive.
