Guest guest
Dear G., your son acquired a brain injury prior to birth, but his condition is excluded in the BIAUSA classification, that it is grossly slanted towards TBI. He has been deprived of the possibility of coverage, by the selection made in order to answer the Legislature's concern, based on ambivalent definitions and a restrictive classification. His condition might only be classified under Other, but they are not really interested in these conditions: " other non-traumatic conditions, such as encephalopathies (to include anoxia, infections, or toxicity), brain (or intracranial) tumors or space-occupying lesions, a hypoxic event (such as “near drowning”), or specific neurological disorders. " Why did they choose to cover ABIs, and to exclude " Other Conditions " ? The Brain Injury Association's definitions are a medico-political agenda, not scientific or even a phylologically defendable classification. It is not based on physipathology, either, that would unify conditions in a different fashion. We should strive to create scientific and legal definitions that would grant greater reality, and treatment coverage, to perinatal conditions. I have been unable to find any organization that confronts the situations created by the accepted definitions. Regards.
