10-11, Local: Suspected mildew problem closes Pine Tree library

By MELISSA TRESNER

Pine Tree Intermediate School's library was shut down Wednesday as a

preventive measure after mildew was found on some of the books,

Superintendent Joe Dan Lee said.

" We've got an issue, but we're going to see how to handle it, " he said

Thursday.

Lee said the library has had problems with air flow, temperature and

humidity in the past, but air quality tests taken just after school started

were normal.

Schools sometimes have problems in the summer months with mildew and

humidity because the buildings are closed, but air flow usually regulates

when school starts, he said.

He said work was done on the heating and air conditioning units this summer

to combat the high humidity.

But after mildew was found this week, Lee said he decided to shut down the

library as a preventive measure.

An indoor air quality company will come next Friday to take tests and make

assessments, he said.
