Please note that I found reports of this behavior difficult to believe -

prior to becoming involved with HBOT. However, since becoming active in

HBOT for our kids, I have determined that there are two camps of people:

1 Parents, Physicians, etc. who are committed to having an opening

mind for the sole purpose of helping these kids.

2 Those who oppose HBOT for neurological applications for some really

good reasons that they have yet to determine.

I sponsored (financed) the Second International Symposium for HBOT for the

CP and TBI Child, July, 2000. I could write a book on the responses I

received from UCP, AACPDM, and UHMS regarding my efforts to implement the

symposium with an open discussion format, allowing for scientific debate

and dissent.

I did this because of the remarkable changes my daughter had with

HBOT, as well as because of the incredibly aggressive positions by many

dedicated physicians (and others) who were vehemently against

HBOT. Obviously, there was valuable information that has been overlooked -

or, so I thought. The truth is there is more information for HBOT for

neurologic applications than almost every other " On-label "

indication! And, the clinical results are clear, as well as reproducible

through out the world.

I was specifically taken aback by the UCP and AACPDM because their charters

and missions are solely to be advocates for your son and my

daughter! Further, they could not properly discuss any aspects of the

science of HBOT, nor the neurology. I can support the fact that there are

always new research findings ad not everyone is up to speed in their

understanding of the science, research or issues. However, these groups

have a fiduciary responsibility (read that : a responsibility that

transcends their own interests, and well being) to our kids. Period.

They specifically only heard Dr. Collette's version of the McGill study,

and felt that the issue of HBOT for CP kids was a dead end proposition.

The UHMS was a different story. And, in developing the symposium and then

after, I have found their interests specifically in line with the proposed

study mentioned (that I am responding to).

Further during my efforts in sponsoring AB 2863 the UHMS sent an " Official "

letter specifying that HBOT has no benefit for our kids, and that they are

the expert witnesses for CMS and FDA. (Others can answer that question, I

won't bother) Later, they sent another " official " letter supporting the

legislation; then during the public hearings, one hospital based company

(the UHMS stronghold) stood up during the public committee hearing during

the time allotted for testimony for " Supporters " only and stated that there

was not enough research for this application, but the committee should give

that company's centers a block grant to research the issue. (I believe it

was this group that got the UHMS to reverse their earlier letter.)

All of these things clearly muddies the water.

Finally, you have the legitimate concerns of prescribing physicians who are

not experts in this areas (HBOT), but have to do the best they can in a

limited environment as they try to provide excellent care for their

patients. They have legitimate concerns based on the " testimony " and

" research " they have access to. Their focus is on their immediate clinics,

not research in " tangential " areas. So, when they hear that the UCP, and

AACPDM, and UHMS find no basis for HBOT, what will the physician think?!

In the final assessment, the most disappointing thing is that HBOT makes

sense at the neuronal cellular level; given the etiology of a brain injury

and the brain's unique physiology. If a trained person really thought this

through (after throwing out one single solitary bias) there could be no

other alternative than for HBOT to benefit a brain injury.

(That single bias is the question of human CNS neuronal regeneration.)

Best Wishes!
