Guest guest
Lois Before you think of medications and worry to much. You said he had a fever right. My nephew had a seizure two years ago a one time event and it was also caused by fever and a double ear infection. You said they did a CT and Blood work. They both came back normal it seems odd they didn't do an EEG. But I really wouldn't panic yet. Through experience I have found when children have infections and ear infections there threshold for seizure activity is increased. Guest guest
My first thoughts are split here...... I'll explain why... first being a concern over the fact that from what you wrote it sounds like he had to be intubated...... not the greatest to be dealing with.... however with the presence of ear infections and fever it could potentially be fibral (spel?) seizures which is not great but is much better then " typical " seizures (if there is such a term but I hope you know what I mean). Many children " typical " and not " typical " deal with these types of seizures and grow out of them....... keep us posted and know your in our prayers.... Guest guest
Did he have vaccines in the past month? Technically, it takes 2 sz to be considered epilepsy and many children do have sz as a result of fever. But his fever is not that high. I don't know about the HBOT, knowing what I know now, I would recommend it, but I would look very closely into his vaccine schedule, and if there is a link there, definitely pursue the HBOT. My daughter has had uncontrolled sz since her 6 month vaccines. Guest guest
Dear Group, I wanted to thank those that responded to my post last week about my grandson having a seizure. I would like to follow up and ask another question. s seizure lasted 30-40 minutes. Fever came shortly after the seizure. Best informatiion I could get was the fever was about 102. They had to give him 8 or 9mg of Atavan, 300 mg of Phenobarbital, and 300 mg. of Dilantin in order to get him out of the seizure, then had to intubate him before ambulance got him to hospital. CAT scan and blood work came back normal. Next day MRI came back clear and normal. They found ear infections in both ears and started antibotics. Now, because of the huge amount of meds to stop the seizure it took him along time to get them out of his system. They had planned on keeping him on Phenobarbital, but he was have a bad reaction to it. They took him off of everything 3 days ago and so far no seizure. They gave them a script for Valium supositorys in case of another seizure. But he was released from the hospital this morning acting very much back to normal. His mom took him home, he had his afternoon nap. Woke from his nap with another fever. Could this be a sign of another infection going on in his body, if Dr's say his ears are clear now. Of course we are afraid this will continue and set off another seizure. His PCP said it's not so much the fever, but if the fever spikes suddenly that sets off the seizure. Is there anything I should be asking the Dr's and Neurologist? Is there anyway to keep a check on him at night while we are all sleeping. I keep him about half time, so need any information I can get for myself and his mom. Thanks again for your help. Lois Bowen-Arizona
Guest guest
Dear Lois, this is deja vu...very similar to my daughter. She also had a status seizure the first time out (viral encephalitis of unknown etiology - but we suspect DPT vaccine) and she did go home on phenobarbital. I think you have a good plan to keep the valium at home, hopefully you will never see another sz of any kind, but because he went into status, that increases the odds of more seizures later. Because my daughter was for a while having regular nocturnal seizures, I strung a windchime on her bed that would rattle whenever the bed started shaking for any reason. I had it placed so that she would bump it if she sat up (sleep walking). After Hannah's encephalitis, she went a year before having another sz. Guest guest
Ellen, What's the status of your daughters sz now?
Guest guest
My daughter's situation is complicated. The short version is that she is right now doing much better than she has in a very long time and is only having one seizure a week. Now the longer version: after the encephalitis, 1 yr sz free on phenobarbital. Then we tried various other drugs and all made her worse. She was having 100s of absence (staring) sz daily plus a tonic clonic (grand mal) about every two days. Her behavior in between was atrocious. Then she did the Ketogenic Diet for 4 1/2 years and this controlled her sz well for 4 years but then a myriad of things happened at once, most significantly the Hepatitis B vaccine which produced an immediate reaction (within 24 hrs). Then she had tonic clonics every 2 days, her short term memory was wiped out, and she developed Parkinson's - like syndrome with tremors every 3 seconds. We pulled her out of her gifted and talented classes when she was found roaming the halls and she did not remember where she was. She quit playing games like Hide and Go Seek because she was afraid she would have a sz and no one would find her. The rages came back, but this time she was bigger and they were 3 hour temper tantrums. Tried and failed more drugs. Then tried HBOT, which reduced her sz 50%, eliminated her tremors, except for at bedtime, made her a much more pleasant child - no more rages. She also moved at a more normal pace instead of the incredibly slow pace that was her norm. Short term memory instead of holdinf less than 24 hours, she could remember things for 2 weeks. She had about 75 treatments of HBOt 2 years ago. All these improvements have held. When finances allow, she'll go for more HBOt. Meanwhile, time and mineral therapy have further improved her condition. Emotionally, she is still a young 7, but she is starting to laugh, starting to play. In the past 6 months her reading level has gone up so that she is only 2 years behind. Lately, she seems to be having some memories coming back. She can now remember some things from a few months ago. Most of her memory from age 7 to 11 is still lost. We try to avoid preservatives in foods, food dyes, MSG, pesticides, flickering lights, mold, and fatigue. She now has a medical waiver so that she will never ever be subjected to vaccine damage again. Ellen
