just because it is not Stachybotrys doesn't mean that it is not bad for you. The aspergillus and chaetomium are a deadly combination, the claudiosporum is quite normal, it is found pretty much everywhere there are wood products used for building materials. Aspergillus produces mycotoxins called Aflatoxins. These aflatoxins have been identified by the USDA to be harmful (have you heard that Texas schools are cutting down on peanut butter, same reason). Aflatoxins are cancer producing agents. Aflatoxins have also been identified as a biological warfare agent, and is listed in the US Army Nuclear, Biological and Chemical training manual. The effects of single toxins on the body are bad, but when a person is exposed to multiple toxins, there is a synergistic effect. Just the fact that these toxins decrease your immune system and allow all types of other diseases to take over should be a good indication about the danger they pose. Don't be fooled into thinking that since it is not Stachybotrys it is not bad. Please find a link to US Army medical manual (http://www.nbc-med.org/SiteContent/HomePage/WhatsNew/MedAspects/contents.html). Here is an aspergillus website: http://www.aspergillus.man.ac.uk/languages/index.html

USDA research on aflatoxins:

http://www.firstgov.gov/fgsearch/index.jsp?mw0=aflatoxin & rn=96 & in0=domain & dom0=usda.gov+fs.fed.us+ag.gov%0D%0Aezec.gov+foodsafetyjobs.gov+jifsr.gov+nutrition.gov+nalusda.gov+reeusda.gov & parsed=true & Submit=Go

I hope this helps.

We did a cheap home depot test and sent it in. The mold sample cultred found Aspergillus, Chaetomium, and Cladosporium. From what I understand these are not the deadly "black mold" type, but the descriptions don't sound to healthy either. There are only a few spots of mold visible in the attic and everything seems dry even after major rain. I get major allergies during the spring and summer. Since moving in my allergies have been only when it's cold and I am inside. Being inside has always been my cure for the outdoor allergies but now it is the opposite. It's difficult to know what to do next. The inspecter found other minor problems with the house and the landlord has already made arrangements to have these things taken care of. I think I need to do a little more research. Thanks, FAIR USE NOTICE:This site contains copyrighted material the use of which has not always been specifically authorized by the copyright owner. Stacey,

The mold will come back if you clean it and the problem that caused it isnt fixed.

I worked in 100 year old federal basement 8 years and now have asthma, wear a 3m mask outside as Aspergillus in mold overwhelms me I am so hypersensitive now. I live with hepa filter air cleaners and now cannot stand odors and react to EVERYTHING!!!! Please be careful in your decision.

,

A negative result does not necessarily mean the mold is not there.

It may mean it didn't happen to fall from the air onto the plate while

the lid was off, survive shipment and still grow. Stachybotrys - as

well as most other molds - can be very difficult to collect on settling

plates. Also, Stachybotrys is a finicky eater and does not thrive on

the food that comes on these plates, which are intended more for

general fungi. In other words, if a type (genus) of mold is on the

plate it was present. But if it did not grow on the plate then you

have no idea. That is called a negative result that may be false.

(false negative). But you don't know.

Hi ,

The advice that Gil gave you was right on track. However, I feel that the information in a good Science/Medical Library at a major University is much better then the internet. It goes into more depth. I myself went into the Sci/Med Library at the University of Pittsburgh, and spent a week researching just Stachybotrys molds. What I didn't understand, I wrote down and called my Biology or Chemistry Profs and asked them to explain it to me. What I found was alot of people who claim they are experts, really aren't. It's really a shame, because they make alot of money off of mold victims, because they don't know anything at all about molds, and they are usually traumatized and in shock and are led about like sheep to slaughter. The reason I researched it out was that I wanted to know who was right and who was full of hot air. The more information you have, the more power you have, the less scared you will be, and you will be able to make much better decisions.
