The mold was found in Louisville Metro's 4th District Substation. Nearly 100 people -- 72 police officers and staff and 24 firefighters -- were being moved to nearby office locations. "There was a strong smell; we suspected that something was wrong," said Helene Kramer, spokeswoman for the department. Kramer said no employee had been ill; however, a few had complained of headaches. "It could be a potential health hazard," she said. The mold can be an irritant to people with allergies and asthma. It is a health concern for people with compromised immune systems, but it is not considered a life-threatening issue. Mayor Jerry Abramson said officials suspected a problem in late January after employees complained of allergies and other related problems. Tests confirmed on Thursday the presence of mold. Repairs to the building are expected to be more than $100,000, including removal of mold, roof repairs, the replacement of the ventilation system and new carpet and painting.
