05/09/03 - 6:04 pmLake Mold To Keep School Closed

Hundreds of children who go to Lake Elementary School won't be going back this August. Lake ISD closed the campus in April because of high levels of mold transfering the students to six other district schools.

Come the first day of school in August, the Lake Elementary doors will remain closed. District administrators met Friday morning with experts.

Collectively, they decided to be safe instead of sorry.

Two months ago they split up all the students and transfered them to other schools in the district.

Now district officials will quickly put together a committee to come up with a new plan for the next year while they remediate the campus mold problem.

"It is important to know that the work of the committee will be sensitive and recognize that this will stretch families, it's going to stretch the district. We're going to have challenges that probably we couldn't even imagine. And we've gotta be upfront and honest about those things and work on them together," Superintendant Rocky Kirk said.

"We're not happy with the situation but bear in mind that this school district or this superintendent, he's not the guy responsible for the problem, he's going to be a part of the solution. So I guess the way that I feel is parents of Lakeway we need to be part of the solution as well," Parent Jeff said.

The schools where the children were transferred a couple of months are not necessarily the same schools the students will go to again in the new school year.

That's part of what this new committee will figure out because two months ago the other campuses faced having to accomodate the new students for just a few weeks. This time around it will likely be for a whole year.
