(AP) - The legislature's Education Committee approved several bills Monday that would require schools to maintain their buildings and would allow diabetic children to test their own blood glucose levels in schools. The school maintenance bill, which includes an indoor air quality provision, is intended to ensure a healthy environment for teachers and students. Teachers and parents of children sickened by mold, dust or dirt in schools have asked lawmakers for several years to pass an indoor air quality bill for schools.A similar indoor air quality bill is being considered by the Environment Committee, and lawmakers expect the two bills to be merged before they go to the floor of the House.Another bill approved by the Education Committee Monday would allow children with allergies to self-administer an "epi-pen" if they have an allergic reaction at school and would allow diabetic children to test their own blood in class. Parents told lawmakers their children are taught to monitor their own health and are capable of doing so, and that trips to the school nurse delay the needed treatment.
