Guest guest
, my husband suffered brain injury following surgery of a tumor on the brain stem w/complications. We started hbot 7 years out and saw real results. What kind of brain injury is involved...Tyne W. Guest guest
His heart stopped beating just before his birth and it took 5-6 minutes to get him out and get him going again. The little man was so active he tied in umbilical cord in a knot and when I was 8cm the doc broke my water not knowing about the knot, his head came down on the knot and cut off his oxygen. By the time they realized that something was wrong, his heart rate dropped and then stopped. A few minutes after that he came out with no breath and no heart beat. Estamated time of no oxygen was 5-6 minutes. Only took about a minute to get him going again, longest minute of my life believe me. Now, I wonder if some or all of his issues are due to that experience. He is 13 now. Thank you for the encouragement. Guest guest
Hello , I don't think it's proper to call my issue a brain injury, but it's definitely intracranial and neurological. " Skull base " would be the conventional way to describe the location of the problem. I have a benign tumor called an acoustic neuroma on my left side. Some have this sort of thing extracted surgically, and others have it treated with radiation that stops it growing so that it doesn't press against the brain and kill you, even though it's still there in your vestibular (inner ear) canal. I chose radiosurgery because I had hoped thereby to save my remaining hearing in that ear. The treatment seems to have been successful in the sense that the tumor stopped growing, but I lost my hearing in that ear anyway plus the tumor and maybe its treatment, also, did terrible damage to my vestibular nerve and the balance center of my brain. The result is continuous throbbing in my head coupled with constant vertigo. Dizziness, sort of. This has nothing at all to do with my having developed a heart condition (congestive heart failure, dilated cardiomyopathy) but there it is. A brain-related and serious problem, although not the result of an injury incident. I'd be interested to know what it was that happened to you, and what the therapy you mention has consisted of. Thanks, Brain injury I am just wondering how many of you have brain injuries, I am trying to figure out what percentage of people have it and how much It has inpacted your life, I have been in rehab 3 times a week finally am cutting back. Thanks for sharing. take care Kauffman ------------------------------------ Be sure to visit and use other ZapLife.org services: The ZapperBBS at http://zaplife.org/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=1 1 - Email list forum at / 2 - Email delivery of the Zapper Newsletter at 2/ 3 - Email list forum for those involved in ICD litigation at 3/ ZapChat - Real time online support group (Thursdays 8PM EST) at http://www.zaplife.org/chat.html ZapFAQs - A glossary of ICD/arrhythmia terms and abbreviations at http://www.zaplife.org/zap4.htm The ZAPPER Home page at http://www.zaplife.org/
Guest guest
Hi , I had a stroke in 2003, which is an injury to the brain, so cannot differentiate the injury results from the stroke itself, as my heart suddenly was the focus of most of the attention, and , as time goes on, and as I keep taking my medications for heart, etc, my body problems pretty much get jumbled together . I have difficulty remembering things, and this resulted in my being unable to continue my career, which was as a policy manager in a branch of the federal government here in Canada where my command of legal language and research capabilities and memory of past court cases across the county were key. I was also a workaholic and absolutely loved what I did and the people I worked with and who worked for me. I also have a balance problem so need a walker and a scooter, have aches and pains where I never used to, periferal neurology (numbness in feet),polymyalgia in my right arm, hypertension, basically my ICD is in me because of risk of sudden death. The impact on my life? an absolute turnaround of 360 degrees, my life as I knew it was no more. I was not allowed to drive for 4 years, no more glasses of wine on the weekend, or any time for that matter, I cannot eat any GREEN foods, or grapefruit, I also need a caregiver, my financial situation hasn't been too bad at this point (I am 63)due to the federal government disability, but as of the age of 65, I will lose the disability part of my pension, so will be again adjusting , this time to pretty much a poverty level income. Coping? The Zapper 'family' is a lifeline to me for support. I felt so alone until I found zapper. people really dont understand when you are sick like this. I have yet to meet someone who has an ICD and I live in the lower mainland of British Columbia, city of Surrey, which is adjacent to Vancouver and other cities. our city alone has a half million people. I find it odd that I haven't met someone with an ICD. In the stroke recovery group, I asked about 50 people and none of them even knew what an ICD was! I try to get out but do spend a lot of time at home. almost all my friends still work and I no longer see them much, our cities are far apart for visitng. I have a standing once a week guest who plays scrabble with me, which really helps my mind. This posting is long, I've never learned how to keep my mouth (?) shut!! lol . Guest guest
Hi there, I am interested to hear are you in any rehab or is your brain ok now. You do also have a zapper right? I am interested to find people who have both problems. take care > From: Yardbird <yardbird@...> > Subject: Re: Brain injury > > Date: Thursday, January 22, 2009, 9:53 AM > Hello , > > I don't think it's proper to call my issue a brain > injury, but it's > definitely intracranial and neurological. Guest guest
Dear , No, I'm not in rehab, although I tried it and it didn't help my particular problem. And I'm only about to have an ICD installed, this week. I've been on this list in order to learn things as I made my decision. Sorry if none of what I explained is of any help to you in your situation. I just volunteered the information about myself because there was a neurological theme in common, but I see that's not enough in this case. Good luck getting more helpful responses. Guest guest
, I sustained a brain injury in 2005 due to my ICD. I'll bvriefly describe it here. I had a cardiac arrest while in the gym on March 31, 2005. Fortunately they had an AED on site and used it to save my life. At the hospital the doctors said I had an arrhythmia and needed an ICD which was then implanted. Because I would workout every day I was in good overall condidtion. I was encouraged to get as much exercise as I could. So on July 5, 2005 I went bicycle riding. While riding, my heart went into an arrhythmia, my ICD shocked the bejesus out of me, I fell over and fractured my skull, I sustained a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) , and I was in a coma for about one month. Six months later, after I had recovered and went through inpatient rehab, I tried to return to work but I was unable to return to my normal work duties at the pharmaceutical company where I worked in R & D as a scientist. I went on Social Security Disability for almost three years. I returned to work at a new job in late 2007. I was hospitalized 6 times during my first year back at work because of my heart problems. I still have after-effects from the TBI from which I may never fully recover, but I do my best because I would rather try to have a normal life than be on disability. I am curious to know why you are interested in brain injuries.
