Because radiation necrosis, wound care (non-healing wounds),

necrotizing fasciitis, osteomyelitis, and much more are all treated

at 2.2 - 2.6 ATA.

You cannot treat those conditions at lower pressures unless you have

an overriding a priori medical reason (heart problems, seizures, etc.)

Ed,

The original post was a reply to Darin, who was referring to the treatment of

brain injury. Regardless, a doctor can treat any condition as he sees fit. The

only thing that comes into play is insurance. If insurance is not being billed,

you can use any pressure to treat any condition.

With that being said, I am not saying that lower pressures should be used in all

cases.

RE: 1.5 ATA.....

while 1.5 ATA 100% O2 is optimal... some patients have great returns

at slightly higher and lower pressures, as well.

Sometimes, when patient's plateau in their treatments, physicians,

increase or decrease the pressure by 0.5 ATA.

Also, many patients do show great returns at 1.75 ATA for limited treatments.

Conversely, newly starting severe anoxic patients (like near

drowning, etc.) do MUCH BETTER when starting at extremely LOW

pressures, like 1.1 100% O2, before moving higher.

So, it remains very much an art.

What ridiculous fees?? The fee for certification is voluntary and if compared to

other certification fees is actually less expensive than any of the others that

my hospital has to pay that were not voluntary (ie. JCHAO, Lab Certification,

Radiology Certification, etc.).? There are quite a few free standing clinics

that have visited that do a great job and then there are others that have not a

clue on the regulations that govern the industry.? Have been in a couple

recently that in addition to not have a code cart or first line emergency

medications, not one of the staff were BCLS certificied.? But they were treating

patients with minimal physician oversight, let alone physical evaluation.
