Crews Tackle School's Mold Problem

POSTED: 6:47 p.m. CDT April 15, 2003 UPDATED: 11:14 p.m. CDT April 15, 2003

BENTONVILLE, Ark. -- The Bentonville School District has spent more than $20,000 to remove mold from the basement at Bentonville's old high middle school.

Mold To Be Removed From School

Although mold specialists say the mold was not extremely toxic, they said it could cause allergies in some people. It was too risky to leave growing, so crews from Egis Inc. stripped some walls and did extensive scientific testing and cleaning, officials said. To prevent mold, experts recommend that homeowners keep and eye on places where water collects. "A person could have mold hidden that you do not see," said Manual , a mold specialist. Most of the time, mold is found around toilets, sinks, and under carpeting, experts said. The most common place is basements. To prevent mold, experts said homeowners should watch their home's humidity levels, which should be under 50 percent.
