Hi Everyone,

I was reading a book by Isadore Rosenfeld, M.D. entitled SECOND OPINION Your

Comprehensive Guide to Treatment Alternatives. Bantam Press copyright 1981

and reissue in 1991.

He has a whole chapter on The Thyroid Gland--Regulating your Thermostat....

and on page 35 I found this paragraph on Hyper-thyroid that I thought some

might find interesting.... This book is very interesting and informative, I

think.

WHEN YOU JUST DON'T GET OVER AN EMOTIONAL SHOCK

Hyperthyrodism occurs most frequently in women between the ages of thirty

and forty years. We don't understand what causes it---probably some breakdown

in the immune control mechanisms of the body. I have seen it develop in

several persons after severe emotional crises. The husband of one of my

patients was convicted of tax fraud and sent to jail. Her shame sadness and

guilt were immense. Shortly thereafter, she began to lose weight and suffer

palpitations. Everyone told her this was to be expected--a typical reaction

to stress. She finally consulted with me beause she had lost some fifty

pounds, and was continuing to do so even after her husbands release from

prison. By the time I saw her, the diagnosis was obvious. Other women in my

practice became hyperthyroid after the death of a child or a spouse; one

elderly lady developed it after she was mugged and robbed. So if you are

suddenly " nervous " in response to a crisis, and remain that way even after it

is over, see to it thta your thyroid function is evaluated before being

relugated to the psychiatric category.
