Kayser-Fleischer Rings

Hi Everyone,

was asking about spots and rings in her eyes and I've found out some

information which might be important.

's disease is a disease characterized by abnormal copper metabolism,

and is marked by copper accumulation in the liver, kidneys, brain, cornea, and

other tissues. Other symptoms include cirrhosis of the liver and degenerative

changes in the brain.

The characteristic ophthalmic feature is a pigmented ring in the cornea

called a Kayser-Fleischer ring, which is described as a golden brown or green

discoloration in the cornea. Since this sounded like what is

experiencing I've been doing some research on 's disease. It's

considered a genetic disease and has other names like familial hepatitis among

others.

(Yesterday I mentioned that there were 9000 studies on 's disease and

hyperthyroidism--this was a search error and that is the number of studies on

's disease.)

There are studies which show that zinc, molybdenum, and sulfur help in

's disease. Since these are all minerals which help copper metabolism,

then it's possible that 's disease has more factors than just genetic

ones. I also saw a study which indicated high aluminum levels were found in

the liver of a person who had 's. We've seen that aluminum interferes

with copper absorption and utilization.

What I'm thinking is that may not be utilizing the copper she is taking

because of other deficiencies of the above mentioned minerals. In fact it's

highly likely that many people with hyperthyroidism (and maybe pheo) may have

problems metabolizing the copper they are ingesting because of the presence of

competing minerals like aluminum or because of the lack of facilitating

minerals like zinc, molybdenum, iron, or sulfur.

For these people taking extra copper may not help because they can't

metabolize it properly for those reasons. Possibly correcting those

underlying problems is necessary before the body will be able to properly use

the copper in the diet or in supplements.

I would advise everyone to keep a look at their eyes for these signs. Even

more important, I would recommend taking those supplements which facilitate

copper metabolism and limiting the amount of competing minerals like aluminum

and manganese.

I will write more about aluminum sources soon.
