What are the differences between PTU and Tapezol?

I am no expert, but from what I understand both Tapazole and PTU are

anti-thyroid medications. Tapazole is longer acting therefore may require

only taking it once per day as opposed to taking PTU 3 times a day.

I take a beta blocker for my racing heart which is a completely different med

than either Tapazole or PTU.

Hello,

Can anyone tell me the difference between Tapezol and PTU? I would

like to start on medication because my heart is beating rapidly and and

I feel as though I'm shaking all over, not specifically in my hands.

The mega doses of CAL/Mag aren't doing the trick.

Thank you,

I don't know the difference between the two you mention, however, I

am on Inderal for my heart as well as my tremors. I still have some

problems with both-mostly if I forget to take a dose, or take one a little

off schedule.

Tapazol and PTU are equally effective, although PTU is often recommended for

women who are child bearing age. (since it doesn't transfer to the placenta).

Some people have an allergic reaction to one or the other. They both take

about 3 weeks to kick in. You may want to ask your doctor for a beta blocker

temporarily to control the pulse rate. I have taken Tapazol on and off for

the past five years with no negative side affects. I do have my liver

checked from time to time for toxicity. So far, so good. I am currently in

remission and off the Tapazol completely (since October 5).

Hi,

I was put on PTU at the beginning and it affected my liver. I was changed

to Tapazole and according to my last week blood work, my liver is now normal

(I also began to take milk thistle but only 2 days before my blood work was

done). I believe Tapazol is less toxic, this drug is much more popular in

Europe than here, usually Drs like to prescribe PTU first (I don't know

why). I think is who has a very good article about PTU' side effects.

Thus, based on my experience Tapazole seemed to be a better choice, after 4

weeks on it my values are normal (I also tried to control my diet, did eat a

lot of brocoli, couliflor and tried to control stress with skilled

relaxation). Like you my heart rate was extremely high so at the beginning

had to take some beta blockers (Inderal) as well until all the rest began

to make effect. Discuss with your Dr possible side effects and what could

be a best choice for you.

I can give you my experiences with Tapazole and the differences between

what I can see Doctors in the US and Canada. I was transfered to Canada

from New York 3 years ago and I was prescribed Tapazole rather than

PTU and my results were more favourable and my liver is just slightly elevated.

In a month my T4's went from 71.9 to 22.2, (just slightly above the norm by .2).

I and my Endo were both content with my results thus far. As many of you may

already know I believe approximately 60% of medical schools are operated,

supported or funded by the nations labaratories therfore no wonder some Dr.'s

most probably back a certain drug rather than others. This is purely my

educated gues on why the differences between US and the rest of the world. I

could be wrong but my tests were true.
