A study presented at a conference in Perth this week showed that children already at risk of developing allergies had a 400 per cent higher risk of developing conditions such as eczema or asthma if exposed to renovations or a new home. Children considered at normal risk for allergies were twice as likely to develop allergies. University of Leipzig environmental research professor Olf Herbarth said his studies had proved that volatile organic compounds found in new carpets, paint, building materials and new furniture put foetuses and babies aged under one at increased risk of allergies. Older children were not as susceptible. Dr Herbarth told the Conference of the International Society for Environmental Epidemiology that his study of 2950 children had prompted health warnings in Germany about the risks of renovations and new homes. Builder Dale Alcock said he doubted that the German results could be translated to the Australian context.
