Detox - Spirulina

Hi Anne:

Yes, definitely, if it is possible to do a detox to help rid the body of certain chemicals this would be wonderful. I know the liver does a lot of the cleaning detoxifying process, I have a book on doing a liver cleanse, it involves taking cod liver oil and fruit etc. etc. and sticking really close to the bathroom while you are conducting this cleanse. But, you know, there are so many things that profess to cleanse this and that, if you take their product or listen to their advice etc. etc. it gets very hard to know, Which is the real way to go.

As for the Spirulina, I was taking this in my carrot juice everyday, along with the soy protein powder. I became sick during this time. It is not that I can blame either one or the other for my becoming sick, it is that I do not have a good feeling about either one of them, therefore, I will not take them again. Thank you Anne, talk to you later. Sheri

Dear Sheri,

I too was taking carrot juice and Spirulina as a juice in the period before

and during when I got ill first off. Like you, I also now avoid them more

out of instinct than anything else!

I've often wondered about Spirulina as it is supposed to be so packed with

so many " LIVE " ingredients, I wondered if there might be a mechanism in

there that could spark off GD... but that is MOST unscientific!

Hello Dawn Rose

This is a bit worrying. I'm in the process of trying to 'get all healthy'

and have bought a veg juicer and was about to throw myself into gallons of

carrot juice. Is there anything to say that that would be a bad idea beyond

your instinct in the matter? Maybe I can ignore all this and blame it on

the spirulina (which I've never heard of) and still carry on with my carrot

juice. <mutter, mutter - ohmigod, what am I going throw myself into if not

carrot juice?>

Hi ,

I am so jealous....I have been wanting a juicer, and carrots and celery would

be my main

reason for this . I believe Spirulina may be a high iodine thing, thus the

possible

problem. Is Spirulina the supplement my friend was trying to sell me? It was the

new

wonderful fad of the moment, and was made from algae. Which sounded too much

like seaweed

to me. But then I was going on instinct only.

They were selling this stuff, getting it through the mail, taking a lot of it,

losing

weight, and frankly looking a bit hyper to me. Scary in my opinion.

Dear ,

I still use the juicer, don't let me dissuade you from that! However

nowadays, I make sure I don't just have the same thing every day as I

believe over doing one thing leads to allergys. For literally months before

I was first ill, I was quite into detoxing and did different diets etc etc.

I am not suggesting that carrot juice and Spirulina were the only triggers

(or even that they were triggers at all) - I just know the idea makes me

feel queasy these days.

There is a theory that excessive use of juices, exposes your systmem to much

more of the essence of something than you could naturally eat. I would

happily juice about 20 carrots in a day and drink all the juice. There is

no way I would eat 20 carrots in a day! The theory goes that if you

continiually consume excessive amounts of any one thing, you will eventually

develope an intolerance or even an allergy to that thing.

I don't think I have an allergy to carrots, though I did drink enough of the

stuff to give me a slight orange tinge (!) and nowadays I don't like the

stuff.

I think GD has taught me that MODERATION is a very important thing - I think

it is part of the whole picture of GD that we are impatient and I tend to be

an all or nothing sort of person... how much this is a result of having

hyperT, or a cause, is anyone's guess! I would say go ahead with the

juicing, even try the spirulina, but be sensitive to your own reaction to

these things and read around about the spirulina, my understanding is that

it is an immune system booster, which - as you know, may not be the best

thing for us.

That's all a bit garbled but I hope it helps.

Hi!

I believe it would be the Spirulina and NOT the carrot juice. Spirulina is an algae like Kelp, surely, and would be therefore packed with Iodine!!

Just a thought in defence of the innocent carrots!!

Love,

Hello Pam

I went halves on the juicer with someone else who also wants to be all

healthy but doesn't (as yet) have quite the same incentive that I have.

What a pity you don't live next door. You would have been welcome to come

in and use this one.
