Guest guest
PMS is absolutely worse. I think we had a discussion about this not to long ago. If memory serves me correctly-I believe it had something to do with progesterone and estrogen levels. I have had swollen lymph nodes all over my body since right around the time I was diagnosed as being hyper-t (1998) and I still have them. I noticed before every period they would increase in size (my lymph nodes that is). My doctor told me that it is because your immune system changes with your cycles. In other words, your immune system is slightly stronger right after your period and gets weaker the closer you get to your period. I think this all has to do with hormones and their effect on the immune system. If what he told me was accurate, then it is easy to see why hyper-t symptoms (which are very much like PMS, insomnia etc...) would get worse right before that time. Aren't we lucky to have to deal with all this fun stuff!!

Guest guest
I am now post-menopausal, but for several years prior to diagnosis, and before menopause (which happened at EXACTLY the same time as my first thyroid storm!), I would notice several things, which I am sure were hyper-t onset stuff: my fingernails would change and I would get hangnails right before my periods. I just saw a site (can't remember where, sorry) that said this could be one of the symptoms of Graves. And, if I was going to get sick, yep, it was at that time. And, the week before my period, I would always have very bad sleep problems, getting up at 2 or 3 a.m. and not being able to get back to sleep. I have only been menopausal for a year and a half, and that is how long I have had diagnosed Graves'. Arlene Re: pms/hyperthyroidism > PMS is absolutely worse. Guest guest
Hi , Yea, dealing with this is FUN! haha! For me, the hyper T symptoms increase, heartrate etc....and i forget that this has anything to do with thyroid, since the emotional symptoms are way way exacerbated. Lately for about a week I think I'm going crazy....now there's lots of sympathy with girls and PMS. So, I've been putting it on the calender as a reminder.....just to keep it in perspective. Thanks for the imput!' E --- Tmmw71@... wrote: > PMS is absolutely worse. I think we had a > discussion about this not to long > ago. Guest guest
Hi Arlene, Any advice for xtra nutritional supplements? That would be grand, I want to be rather aggressive with this since 1 week of the crazies is too much for this life. Guest guest
Hi Eve, You are already taking Vit E, I believe. Don't forget things like Evening Primrose Oil (alternate for ev. primrose would be borage or black current oil), and your A & B vitamins for PMS. In Rosemary Gladstar's book: Herbal Healing for Women, there is a whole section on different herbs to use prior to your menstrual time. One of the herbs suggested is Vitex (in a tincture) and I am pretty sure Black Cohosh is another one. Other things mentioned are Dong Quai and Motherwort. Rosemary says about the three oils (ev. primrose, borage or black current oil: " These three oils are high in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), which has a marked positive effect on PMS symptoms. It is especially beneficial for breast tenderness. " She also says to keep your calcium intake high, though not with dairy. You might drop into your health food store and see what they also suggest, since I don't have a good all-round herbal book. We have two excellent herbal stores in my little town, so I always just go there when I have questions. Hope this is helpful, Arlene Re: pms/hyperthyroidism > > > > > > > PMS is absolutely worse. Guest guest
I knew there were some problems with Black Cohosh and looked it up in my " Drug & Natural Medicine Advisor " . Here is what they say about it: " Black cohosh, whose rhizome and root containe substances that act like the female hormone estrogen, is prescribed for several menstrual and menopausal conditions. LThe herb also acts as a sedative and is believed to promote urination and aid in expelling mucus from thelungs. " WARNING: " Black cohosh can cause serious side effects; use this herb only under medical supervision. Individuals suffering from congestive heart failure or any other type of heart disease should not use black cohosh " . Wanted everyone to know this. Guest guest
Eve, I hear about different herbs doing different things quite often. Have a hard time getting any of it to stick in my brain, usually, but Black Cohash and Dong Quai seemed to have done just that. If you're going to use them, just make sure you know what kind of balance they need to be in with other nutrients. You're trying to help your body heal, not make it worse. I think that's what I did for so long. Much better in balance.
