Thanks so much for everyone's response to my situation. I wish just leaving were as easy as that. I have no place to go. I don't have relatives here and most of my friends live in other states and the thought of me coming to stay with them with my six children is overwhelming. This summer I have spent visiting people in other states just to stay out of the house. It was nice but anything permanent would be horrific and a terrible imposition on others. It's not like I don't wish every day that I was able to leave this house permanently.

I have thrown out all my furniture and some beds, but still have yet to replace the mattresses and pillows. Right now three of the kids are sleeping in sleeping bags. I have gone through clothes and gotten rid of many bags. I am just wondering if mold can be washed out of clothes or will it always stink like mold. I just can't imagine having to replace 2 adults and 6 kids worth of clothes. I have taken pictures of the mold and the gradual process of gutting and replacing, but I am not sure who that will benefit except to look at it in the future and say "yep, that's what it was like......" .

That is interesting about bleach. I can't tolerate it anyway. It makes me so sick and my lungs close up. Since living here in this house my MCS has been worse than ever and tolerance to chemicals of any kind and even natural substances has gone down to zero!

When I was told by the insurance company that they were not under any circumstances going to cover my claim, they told me to just spray everything with bleach. It infuriates me that they blurt out things like that as if it's a solution to the problem which it isn't, yet they refuse to pay for the losses incurred because of a broken pipe. Why do we even have insurance????? The only people who benefit from insurance are the insurance employees themselves. The rest of us just pay their salary.

It has been like a living nightmare and everyone I know knows what I have been dealing with, but none that have taken it too seriously. I think my allergist for the kids showed more concern and action than any of my friends and relatives. I do feel like I am at the breaking point, but God willing I will keep on keeping on.

If bleach is so ineffective, why do the insurance companies and their subcontractors that clean your house when there is a water break, advocate it. I can't imagine that they would profit from that advice. I guess I am just wondering why the hype if something as simple as vinegar can kill it. Also, vinegar is fermented so it would seem that it would not kill something like a fungus. Does anyone know if oxyclean works?

Fortunately the only things that I have had to replace is the moldy building materials and that is not even halfway completed. I have literally thrown out everything except for clothing and mattresses. The kids and I have very little possessions left but it still seems cluttered and hard to get around because of all the construction materials laying around.

The clothes will have to wait until we move from this environment and then I will just sell them all or trash them. I just can't imagine where I'll get the money to buy new ones. The scarey thing is how do you know that the clothes you buy from the store are any better. I found a shirt at Walmart the other day that had mold on the sleeve and the employee I asked didn't have a clue where it came from. All I could think about was their warehouse could be contaminated with mold. Then I have been to Home Depot to get materials and the wood is nasty and moldy. They told me it was just about impossible to find any wood this year that didn't have mold. They told me the dampness is causing all their wood to have some moldy areas. That really disturbs me!!

I looked up on the internet to see if there were any lawyers out there that dealt with mold issues alone. There were a few "environmental" lawyers in Baltimore, but it seemed like a big step for someone like me who doesn't have a penny to my name anymore and in debt up to my eyeballs.

I talked to the insurance company today and the woman who is handling my claim was so arrogant and talking with this feigned sympathy. A friend of mine's husband, a plumber, came out and saw the damage and said they should cover it, yet when they talked to insurance company she turned it all around. She called me and gloated that his findings will go into her folder and back up her decision to deny my claim. She said she talked to her legal counselors and they will back her up. She was so nasty. I hung up on her even though I knew that wasn't a good thing to do. I don't normally ever hang up on people, but she was too much for me to handle.
