If your thyroid blood tests ruled out thyroid problems, the thyroid scan shouldn't be necessary. It's used to judge how much RadioActive Iodine should be used to kill your thyroid, or to tell which areas of your gland are overactive. Do YOU think you need THAT? If you're having dizziness and rapid heart beat, with no indication of abnormal thyroid levels, then it's probably related to something else. Find another doctor ASAP. Just my opinion, of course, Chris
Guest guest
I'd refuse the thyroid scan....there are addtl thyroid tests they can take. Don't subject yourself to radioactive iodine especially when it's not necessary. Get a second opinion and tell them to find another way to test for thyroid disease. Rememember, it's your body and your life, no one can MAKE YOU take the test. good luck, Mona A question about tests. I am new to this group. I have not been dignosed with thyroid problems. Recently I have had dizziness and rapid heart beat as symptoms. My Family doctor did a blood test to rule out thyroid problems. The tests were normal. He sent my on to a cardioligist. She has ordered a thyroid scan, (I think that's what she called it) I guess I guestion the need for this test if the first was negative. Has anyone ever had an experiance like this? Guest guest
Hi again, Nadine - Joan and Mona are right. There are many tests that can be run to determine thyroid disease, WITHOUT swallowing radioactive pills. Find out just which tests WERE run, what your levels were, and what that laboratory's " normal " ranges are. Get copies if you can. Then find a doctor who knows something about thyroid disease. >>> Also keep in mind that many times a thyroid test can be within the " normal range " - but since everyone's system is different, it may not be an ideal level for you. Did they run: -- serum T-4 -- " free " T-4 -- serum T-3 -- " free " T-3 -- TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) -- Thyroid Stimulating Immunoglobulin -- AntiThyroid Peroxidase (Microsomal antibodies) -- Thyroglobulin Antibodies -- TSH Receptor Antibody -- Or an ultrasound of the thyroid? Perhaps other group members may know of other tests. Best Wishes, Chris > I am new to this group. Guest guest
Thank you all for your answers. I think I need to ask more questions. I don't know what kind of blood test the doctor took. It also tested my cholestorol, blood sugar and electrolyte levels. I need to ask for those tests. I have no idea what was tested and what wasn't. The cardioligist has ordered a tilt test for the same day to test my blood pressure. She said while I was on the table and already had the IV in we might as well do this test also. She said because I had weight loss and inability to gain weight along with dizziness and racing heart we should do it. I also have trouble swallowing and blood in the urine. Apperantly these trouble her no matter what the test said. However, I did have surgery on my neck in Sept to fuse a vertabre. I wonder about that. Sorry this got so long. Thank you all again for your posts. I will start asking alot of questions on Monday. Nadine
