A friend of mine has it and I am concerned about her. A Candida albicans is a fungus that is naturally present in the body. Sometimes the internal balance is upset, leading to an overgrowth called candidiasis which can cause a multitude of problems. If the fungus continues to spread unchecked it can weaken the immune system. Most people first notice an infection on the skin, such as recurring nail infections or white patches on the skin or in the genital region. Babies can develop oral thrush when breastfeeding if the mother is infected. People most susceptible to candida infection are those on long term antibiotics, the contraceptive pill or chemotherapy. When friendly bacteria in the intestines is destroyed sugars are not metabolised, leaving the yeast a veritable feast. If you have ever baked bread you know that yeast blooms with sugar and warm water. The same happens in the body, leading to bloating pain, heartburn, irritable bowel and overall poor digestion. Other symptoms are more systemic, which can complicate a diagnosis. Excessive fatigue, kidney and bladder complaints, sinusitis, joint pain, mood swings and hyperactivity may point to an overgrowth of candida. Typically these complaints will be worse in damp climates or mouldy environments. A diet high in sugar and refined carbohydrates will also aggravate the conditions. A person suffering candidiasis may have an increased appetite for sweets and stimulants which is further indication that action needs to be taken. It is important to replenish the friendly bacteria in the bowel either through supplementation. If trying to kill off the yeast it is easier to follow a special diet prescribed by a professional than try and do it alone. It is a strict diet but the results can be astonishing. There are supplements that can help to kill the condida so the friendly bacteria can once again take proper control. These supplements combined with a specified diet will bring the body back into balance. lna Holman is a Registered Homeopath and works at the Natural Health Service, 67 Cannon Workshops, Hertsmere Rd, Canary Wharf.
