Re: Sensible Mold Solutions

As someone who has experienced mold in my home, but choose not to be

victimized, I am greatly concerned about this post. Over the last 17

months, I have attended several conferences and seminars. I have

started a nonprofit organization, and have also researched just about

every aspect of mold. I do not particilarly care for the term " toxic

mold " as that in and of itself is meant to scare people.

My biggest concern with your post is the Siamons Mold Controlling

solution. I have looked at the website that is supposed to be the

manufacturer, yet could not find the MSDS. I also could not find the

EPA Registration number for this product. As you know, ALL products

used to control mold in ANY manner MUST be registered as such with the

EPA. For all I could find on this product, it could be manufactured

in someone's bathtub. It really concerns me when I hear someone

state, " this product will kill mold. " It might do that, but then what

happens to the dead spores? They are typically left in the home,

floating in the air, which then allows them easier access to someones

lungs. For the elderly, young and sick, this could be deadly very

quickly. For the rest of us, it's a slow poison.

Even the EPA states that the mold should be removed. This is why

sheetrock, which is a breeding ground for mold, should always be

removed. The porous material causes the spores to settle deeper

inside making it almost impossible to clean. Pouring a water-based

solution on this type of material is just like feeding the ape at the

zoo.

I too have had more than my share of shady " mold experts " , that's why

I only align myself with the best. I attend the conferences from

ACIH, ACGIH, HIE, IAQA and OSU-OKC (well actually I was a speaker at

that one).

I hope to be able to meet you in Orlando this coming week so that we

can further discuss this product. Maybe you can offer me some insight.

I heartily " second " the previous responses to your post.

To further assist you in your (continuing?) search for a " Sensible "

Mold Solution, please check out some other Web sites, those of

some of the (non-profit) organizations that Eliza mentioned.

Indoor Air Quality Association (IAQA) at www.iaqa.org

American Indoor Air Quality Council at http://www.indoor-air-

quality.org/

American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists at

www.acgih.org and order their book " Bioaerosols: Assessment and

Control. " Carefully read sections 15.2, 15.4, 16.2, 16.2.3 and

16.2.4.

Oh, don't forget the EPA site at www.epa.gov/iaq and the FIFRA

registration requirements for anything that " kills " anything.

Then go to www.epa.gov/iaq/molds and download any of their many

doucments on mold, but especially " Mold Remediation in Schools

and Commercial Buildings. " If you prefer PDF, it can be

downloaded at

www.epa.gov/iaq/molds/graphics/moldremediation.pdf

Then go to the site of the IICRC at http://www.iicrc.org/s520info.html

This is an official notice and statement from IICRC about the soon

to be available S520 " Standard and Reference Guide for

Professional Mold Remediation. " This is a consensus standard

from some of the best consultants, remediators, academics,

medical, research, legal, consumer advocate and other experts.

Once it becomes available -- you can pre-order now for delivery in 3-

4 weeks -- please read it and then let us know if you have truly

found a " Sensible " Mold Solution.

BTW, even the expert authors of S520 don't consider it to be " the

solution " to mold. Rather, it is an ongoing effort with much still to

be learned. The document is clearly identified as a " living

document, " meaning it will be periodically updated as science,

medicine, research and real-world experience warrant.

My contact information is immediately below should you have any

questions for me.

As always, the subject of mold always seems to bring out the " best "

in people. And rightly so. There have been many people who have

gotten burned trying to find help or a reasonable answer.

Someone asked me to substantiate my credentials as a " mold expert " .

For the record, I am not a mold expert nor was my goal ever to become

one. I simply discovered that there was much information on the

internet about mold and that for many people, seperating the wheat

from the chaft was an formidable challenge. Further, I felt there was

a large enough information problem - as in an abundant supply

of " Toxic Black Mold " , " Got Mold " etc/ " - I would build put my money

where my mouth was and create a " sensible " website with " sensible

solutions " . This task cost me much personally, finacially, and

emotionally which none but a few other fellow webmasters will likely

be able to appreciate (for them they know how much time and energy a

website takes to create ;)

Nevertheless, the information you will find at 911Mold is nothing I

had to become a mold expert on. In fact the information contained

there is basic building science 101 with added doses of material

extracted from what I thought where the best environmental health,

indoor air-quality and healthy home sites on the internet.

There is more information there on the Siamons Mold Control - as in

MSDS sheets and Regulatory sheets. It must be easy to miss so I will

do some updates to make it easier to find. In the interim, however,

let me point you directly to the Siamons Mold Control website where

you will find a wealth of information including their test reports,

testimonials, and background.

So, with that said, please take a deep breath and try to remember

that I am not " one of them " - I am just like you - a concerned

citizen truly interested in making my home safer and better place to

be. More than 15,000 people have visited our site just this month and

I am sure left there a little more educated and little more satisfied

to know that they don't have to burn their house down or pay a

remediation contractor $5,000 to tear out a wall or floor.

I have and will continue to look towards the " true mold experts " the

men and women of the indoor air quality, industrial hygienist and

other professional associations for answers to the questions and

problems associated with this problem, and I will continually try to

report and present this information as " sensibly " and simply as I

can. I invite each of you to help me with this effort and offer your

insight, ideas and solutions to the mold menace.

I Thank each of you for your responses and for the ongoing support of

this e-group - one of my favorites.

Sincerely,

J. Carrillo
