FEMA Warning Residents About Home Moisture The Federal Emergency Management Agency is warning folks in the Valley affected by last week's near-flooding to dry out your basements, and fast. If you had water in your basement or somewhere in your house, get rid of it, because it could mean mold follows close behind. As NEWS 9 has told you in Target 9 Investigations in recent years, mold is considered a serious threat to houses and homeowners themselves. If it's untreated, it can form spores and become airborne, which is how it spreads. Mold spores will attach themselves to the first surface they touch. The greatest health risk is posed to infants, young children, pregnant women and the elderly. Plus, mold wreaks havoc with allergy sufferers. FEMA advises you, check the basement and everywhere else in your house, and if you find mold or standing water, first dry it out completely. Then clean, disinfect and dry the moldy area. After you're done, bag any moldy materials like rags, paper, leaves, etc. and get them out of the house. And don't forget to wear gloves while you're working.
