Guest guest
Where will mold grow? Just about anywhere. Any organic material is nutrient. Inside, this includes house plants and their soil, fabric, food items, leather, wood, cardboard, and paper. Like all paper, the back of drywall is excellent nutrient when wet or damp. Even dust can be a nutrient, causing mold to grow on concrete walls and floors, althought concrete itself cannot grow mold. Any mold on concrete should wash off easily with dilute chlorine bleach. Moisture is necessary for most molds to grow. If you can't see mold, but can smell it, it is still there. I assume you are concerned, but not yet senstiized. If so, clean your basement thoroughly before filling it up with your possessions. Afterward, make sure relative humidity is kept low. In summer, even leak-free basements can have far higher relative humidity than the upstairs living area. Buy a humidity meter and a dehumidifier. Run the dehumidifier whenever the relative humidity exceeds 50%. A house that was closed for a year without an air conditioner or dehumidifier likely has at least some basement mold which should be cleaned. Mold is ubiquitous. All homes have mold. But careful home maintenance, paying particular attention to water leaks and humidity, will keep mold levels low enough to be tolerable. I have recently purchased a house and am trying to learn more about mold and where it can be found but have not found any reliable sources of info on the web, everyone has their own quick fix or opinions on the matter. I don't see anything in the house but am wondering about the basement, it is dry but thehouse was closed up for a year and I think I have found some mold on some shelves down there (wood). Can mold grow on the cement floors or stone walls also? If so,removing the material is out of the question, if it does prove to be mold what can be done if bleach does not work, there has to be something that is effective ? _________________________________________________________________ Expand your wine savvy — and get some great new recipes — at MSN Wine. http://wine.msn.com
