Report Downplays School Mold ConcernENFIELD - The rugs and upholstered furniture in some classrooms at Prudence Crandall Elementary School are on their way out, but there is no need for general concern about mold and microbial activity there, according to a report by an industrial hygienist. The board of education requested the report, submitted by EnviroMed Services Inc. of Meriden, after tests in November showed airborne concentrations of aspergillus-penicillium-type fungi, which are potentially allergenic to humans, in two classrooms. The company recommended more tests to clarify the type and concentration of the fungus. Those were performed on Dec. 4 and showed "no indication that microbial amplification is occurring" in the two problem rooms tested. The report suggested, though, that the school periodically monitor its air quality, that it dehumidify and filter its air, and that it remove dust-collecting items such as area rugs and upholstered furniture. The issue was brought to School Superintendent Gallacher's attention by a school aide who claims she has been made ill by a persistent mold problem in the school. Gallacher has said he has not received widespread complaints. "I think the report was very favorable," he said Wednesday. "The guy said this is really not a bad kind of thing, but look, it if bothers you, it bothers you."
