mold & thyroid problems

Dear All:

I just wanted to thank everyone who provided information on potential mold-related thyroid problems and pass on some information from my doctor. When discussing possible treatments for my daughter, the doctor suggested that the antihistamines my daughter has had to take for mold related allergies and asthma may contribute to the weight gain part of the thyroid problems. The antihistamines can make you drowsy and slow down metabolism. They can also make you thirsty. Children don't or can't always differentiate dehydration from hunger. They will eat when they are actually thirsty. This causes over-eating and weight gain from the underactive thyroid. We all need to drink alot of water, but if a child is experiencing mold illnesses, we need to especially watch that they drink water. When they say they are hungry, and you know better, have them drink a glass of water. A good substitute is Propel water, made by Gatorade if has a few additives, but the flavor without alot of carbs and sugar will help. Also, if you are working in a sick building which is undergoing remediation, they are probably using dehumidifiers making you dryer as well as the building. The allergies or thyroid problems won't disappear, but it's amazing how something as simple as drinking water before eating can really help.

Sincerely,

Armstrong - HOBB Florida
