Guest guest
Kari It might be an idea to have your daughter's Carnitine levels tested. Carnitine is an amino acid that I believe is obtained mainly from meat. A deficiency can be a cause of seizures. Carnitine levels can be obtained from a blood test ... make sure you ask for free carnitine and total carnitine levels. Guest guest
Kari, I don't know if this info can help you or not. Obviously you can filter out causes from vaccine, and some other harmfull exposures because you child has not been exposed to them. However, you said you are remodeling the upstairs. I too, bought an older house and remodeled the attic into living quarters, however, we are unable to use the space now. Initially after finishing it we moved all of our bedrooms up there and that is were the seizures started about 1.5 yrs ago. I noticed that all of us, except for my husband, woke up in the morningtime congested. So I ended up putting the bedrooms back downstairs. My daughter's seizures seemed to improve. I put it to the test once more by moving but had the same result. My guess is that since this is an older house, but from what I have heard even newer ones are affected, that there is some kind of mold activity within the walls or somewhere that is not visible to us, causing an allergic reaction. Also, since I am an animal lover I have always had several animals in and out of the house. Well, just recently I was able to break myself from doing this. They all stay outside now, and again we have decreased seizures. My ex-husband, who gets two times a week, and I, both have noticed that when is congested (her nasal passage sounds stuffy), she has increased seizures. My guess is that allergies lower the seizure threshold. I hope this info helps. Tracey

Guest guest
Kari, I don't have much information to give you except that I have now heard of three cases besides my son's that have related to remodeling old houses and seizures. Two other cases have found the cause to be the type of insulation used. I am still investigating the type used, so I cannot give you that info. My son is three and started having seizures this past summer. We have lived in our newly remodeled old farm house that is 150 years old. His EEG showed activity from the frontal to back area, but MRI came back normal. He is currently on Phenobarb which is preventing any seizures. Keep me posted as our situations seem to be similar. Jaret was also bitten by a tick this summer as well. Lyme's test came back okay. He also does not sweat much, and my husband and I feel that a sudden rise in body temperature triggered his seizures. He was not sick at the time of any of his seizures. Carmen Mom to Jaret Greenwich, OH > Hi > I'm new - searching for information and answers. Guest guest
Kari, Where in Northern California do you live? Are you within driving distance of Santa ? Have you checked out any of the resources among our website links - ? If not, I encourage you to do so. You can even ask questions of physicians online and get a personal answer. Doing just that has proved very beneficial for me. And, that is why I encourage others here to seek " second opinions " using this resource. Guest guest
Kari, I highly recommend you contact s-Reiter . This epilepsy-specific clinic is located in Santa . Please understand, the clinic does not normally treat children as young as 5-years-old. However, the clinic has a global reputation when it comes to treating epilepsy. So, they know who the best doctors are when it comes to treating epilepsy. If I were you, I would contact them via e-mail and see if you could get a referral from them. Good luck. Guest guest
Dear Kari, Two books that might be helpful to you are " Treating Epilepsy Naturally, " by A. , and " epilepsy: a new approach, " by Adrienne and Reiter, M.D. Someone has already suggested the remodeling project as a possible source of seizure provocation. You also mentioned that your daughter just started Kindergarten. The fumes from dry erase markers and magic markers can be problematic for some children. In addition, fluorescent lights can instigate seizures. The classroom teacher should be able to make adjustments that will compensate for these things if they are an issue for your daughter. It makes sense to address them until you are certain. Another thought that may or may not have merit relates to the vegetarian diet. There is research that suggests that the gluten found in wheat, rye, barley and oats (though there is some disagreement about oats), can cause a build-up in the brain and can be directly linked to some cases of epilepsy. You may want to do some research on Celiac Disease or Celiac Sprue (these are the same as gluten intolerance) to see if there is anything there that fits or makes sense to you. Personally speaking, gluten is a major trigger for my seizures. Pat lists some resources in her book that may help you find other healthcare providers to work alongside your M.D. I think that naturopathic doctors can be very helpful, and there seem to be some good resources north of you in Oregon and Washington. I hope this helps! Please keep us posted on how you are doing! Best wishes, Carrol malmarocking <malmarocking@...> wrote:Hi I'm new - searching for information and answers. She's never had an antibiotic or any medication in her life. However she had a seizure and walked into the road and had another one and nearly fell down the stairs, so we are fearful for her safety. Within four days of starting the zarontin - she started vomiting after taking it so we stopped. The neurologist has recommended depacote which frankly scares the hell out of me. Guest guest
Hi Carrol, Thank you so much for taking the time to respond to my query. Everybody who has written has been so helpful. This is such a challenge right now. My daughter attends a public Waldorf School where they use only organic food in the classroom, only natural light and candles and, yes, her teacher is being wonderful. They only use beeswax and natural crayons and paints, no markers. I am doing my best to rule out every possible " cause " for these seizures. Thus far I have been referred to a cranial osteopath, a kineseologist, and several homeopaths. The only drug that we feel vaguely comfortable giving her is Zarontin. She has an MRI scheduled for this week. My husband and I are very nervous about it. They want to sedate her for it. She is a very strong child and could, I think, withstand the MRI without sedation. I would appreciate any feedback from parents with young children who have had MRI's. We have been told that the test will last about 45 minutes and that her whole body will be in the machine, not just her head. They have said that they do not play music to try and drown out the noise and they do not talk to them whilst the test is being conducted. My daughter asked why wasn't there a window so that she could see us during the test. I am almost to the point where I don't want to subject her to the test at all. My husband thinks we should in order to rule out everything. I am questioning everything I can think of - including her diet. Thank you for your advice. Guest guest
Kari, My daughter had an MRI when she was five, unsedated. Actually, they wanted to sedate her but could not find a vein for the IV. It worked out fine. Most of her body went into the machine, but I was able to stand near her and keep a hand placed on her lower leg so she knew I was there. I told her to try to take a nap and she actually fell asleep within ten minutes. It was almost as if the sound, along with the fixed position (they are strapped in), and blankets, lulled her asleep. However, it was extremely noisy outside the chamber. So, it can be done without sedation. Kari Dear Kari, Look into two aminos-carnisine & carnotine. We are also vegetarians. My son has had grand mal & absence seizures. I have had him on both aminos for eight days and his daily absence seizures have decreased dramatically. Elliot has been on depakote for over a year and it still does not fully control his seizures.
