Dear All:

Here's a news story regarding the meeting held today by the Insurance Commitee Task Force on Mold of the Florida House. Most speaking were from the IAQ sector and wanting regulation on education and training. I agree that this is important, but why won't somebody in power realize the true issue. You have to have moisture intrusion to have mold. Most residential mold problems in new homes is a direct result of code defects, poor building practices and lack of proper code enforcement. Florida has great laws for the regulation of construction and it is so unfortunate that many Building Officials and contractors choose to ignore minimum state code. If more were done to ensure proper construction, many of us would not be living and working in sick buildings. The best point made in today's meeting was that the "new" mold regulations is Texas is a poor model for anyone.

By WeederFirst Coast NewsJACKSONVILLE, FL -- Mold in homes is the target of lawmakers who are eying changes to Florida law. On Wednesday, several lawmakers held a mold workshop to hear from homeowners, insurance companies and businesses that make it their business to clean up mold. Armstrong came to share her experiences. The homeowner from Mandarin has been in litigation for several years to solve a mold problem. Armstrong says, "It's my home and several others in this area [have the problem] because of construction defects. You have mold, it's a moisture intrusion." Lawmakers heard the problem can be handled in different ways. There's general agreement education plus more regulation is needed. State Representative Kim Berfield chaired the workshop. Berfield says, "There is no type of regulation for people coming and doing cleanup for mold infested areas. Because of that, the job is not being done well." The hearing in ville is the last of three held in Florida. The committee will now report back to the Speaker of the House on ways to keep mold at bay.
