It is not an effective or lasting killer of mold and mold spores. Bleach is good only for changing the color of the mold. While it is true that bleach is not a cure-all, it is an important weapon in the fight against mold. It is extremely effective in killing mold and other microorganisms on non-porous surfaces, even diluted ten to one or more. Undiluted bleach stores very well at room average temperatures, and retains most of its strength a year or more. That is why it is recommended as a first step in cleaning up after any flooding. However, as far as porous material, the bleach is only effective as far as it penetrates. Spraying on drywall will not provide killing power all the way through, and moldy drywall must be removed. Bleach is also very damaging to fabrics and many other materials. It will totally ruin polyurethane foam stuffing in upholstered furniture when applied in amounts sufficient to kill all mold. It cannot save books or photos without harm. It is also damaging to electronic items, and must be used with extreme care and rinsed with distilled water. It is imperative that the source of moisture/humidity be stopped before remediation can take place, and heavily contaminated items discarded. There are no magic bullets for mold control, but there are processes, and bleach is part of one process. It is quite likely that bleach treatment stimulates mycotoxin production. Such production is part of the survival mechanism of many molds, and will happen with any chemical or biological mold remediation product. However, bleach does kill mold, and once dead, that mold can no longer produce mycotoxin. Cleaning afterward is however recommended, since the dead mold colony will become nutrient for more mold once the bleach decomposes or is otherwise consumed. _________________________________________________________________ Concerned that messages may bounce because your Hotmail account has exceeded its 2MB storage limit?
