Guest guest
I have learned a ton on the ketogenic list. . . I've been amazed by the number of parents who have shared their experiences which mirrored mine. In many cases, they were experiences just like mine that had been blown off by my neuro. Tegretol keeps coming up as one that kids easily go toxic on and that that toxicity can actually cause seizures. I can tell you that my daughter went toxic on Tegretol -- we were with another neurologist at the time. He kept pushing the Tegretol up and she kept getting worse. She went into status and landed in the pediatric ICU under the care of another neurologist. He told me that she was " flying " on Tegretol and that that was likely what had happened to send her into status (and, yes -- her blood levels had been monitored all along). He pulled her off it cold turkey and " loaded " Depakote. . .then we dealt with withdrawl from the Tegretol with the added shock of the hit of Depakote, not to mention working out all the emergency meds she'd been given. I've heard this same exact story twice on the keto list. I have read, either here or on the keto list, not sure which, about the additions being added to the Tegretol information that discuss potential liver damage. . .which it looks like has also happened to my daughter. As for Lamictal, the other similarity I hear over and over again is when kids start having night seizures and night terrors while on Lamictal. This happened to my daughter, too. She never had either until she was on Lamictal. It looks like, from our experience and others on this list, it takes a long time for this to abate. I believe I have heard medical references to both -- although I don't have any cites. What I'm mainly talking about is " Mom experience " which tends to weigh more heavily than what neuros read from the drug companies. One final similarity has been Topomax and the number of times I've read about it completely " zeroing " out kids. That, I've read on Medscape, although it was completely denied by our neuro. Hope this helps. . .--D --- Aja Beasley <aja_ab@...> wrote: > Hello... What do you mean, Tegretol exacerbates > seizures? Oh great.
