My letter to GMA

Here's my response that I sent to ABC's Good Morning America regarding their Health News report this morning:

ABC used to be my favorite place to find out what is going on in America, however, ABC has become to me nothing more than a shamed prostitute. This morning's report that you wrongly called "Health News", was in all reality, a huge advertisement for the breast implant industry which continues to tout their dangerous, flawed products as new, improved, and "safe." We've heard these claims many times before. And yet, while thousands of women were harmed by their breast implants, Dow hid their assets under the blanket of bankruptcy protection. Settlement? I don't think that had been paid out, much as you would like all gullible Americans to believe. No cancers, autoimmune diseases linked to implants? Where are you talented researchers? On vacation? Not in existence? Maybe Dr. Snyderman chose to ignore the research that does show in fact that there are increased rates of brain cancer and lung cancer in implant recipients. (check out the Epidemiology Journals in May 2001) Obviously, she chose to ignore the study that showed a connection between ruptured implants and fibromyalgia. (Again, 2001.) How odd that she would make the claim that the other (seriously flawed) studies have not been picked up by mainstream media, when rather it is the studies showing higher rates of disease that are being ignored. But it is understandable when one realizes that this is what the implant manufacturers need for women to remain ignorant of the real dangers of breast implants. What a nice team you two make, both pretending to be purveyors of the truth, when in reality, you are just about money! We should have known! Mentor, of course, has a less than stellar record when it comes to quality of manufacture and quality of research. Funny that you wouldn't mention that.

The FDA's many reports of serious adverse reactions to breast implants exist for a reason. Women are reacting to them. And the number of reports the FDA receives is but the tip of the iceberg for what is really happening. Statistically, the number of women reported as being sick will never tell the full story, unless we factor in the huge percentage of those who have remained silent victims because of the large amount of denial, confusion and deceit that has surrounded the breast implant issue for decades, and exacerbated by the medical profession who chooses to remain just as deceptive and ignorant in their treatment. ABC just continues to be one more pawn in this hugely profitable game, and this is to your shame. News leader? Maybe. Purveyors of the truth? Hardly.
