Subject: Another Implant Horror Story Date: Sat, 8 Feb 2003 13:34:19 -0800 Dear Ilena: My email comes to you in great jubilation that it is truly a blessing that I came across your web site via the "Glamour Magazine" - Gordon "Breast Implant Horror" article. Unfortunately, approximately 15 years ago, I was a young woman who opted to have silicone implants put in my body which in 1987 the Doctor who preformed my surgery never once mentioned to me the dangers or effects of the implant product except that the only danger associated with the procedure is the "usual" surgery complications one may get when they have any surgery. Please believe one thing, "I would have never put Implants in me, if I was informed of the risks that can developed". To make a long story short, In October of 2002 prior to leaving for a trip to Las Vegas to meet with friends from Atlanta, I started to experience sharp pain in my chest and breast areas. My Husband and I stopped at a neighborhood clinic in North County San Diego to have a Dr. examine me and he diagnosed the problem as an upper respiratory infection and Bronchitis. The Dr. prescribed an antibiotic to take for (2) weeks along with some pain pills, and stated, I should be feeling much better in a few days. The first antibiotic didn't work and my systems were getting worst, so I went back to the clinic and they changed my antibiotic and needless to say, I was still very sick and the pain had not stopped. In fact, I started having other physical problems which were dizziness, severe headaches, muscle pain in my upper chest/breast, neck and arms to the point that I ended up in a Hospital emergency room. There too, the Dr. examine me and said I had Pleurisy, and prescribed more antibiotics, steroids, and pain medication. This ordeal kept repeating itself, and in the past 4 months I've been to (3) different Hospital emergency rooms. What I did notice eventually while going through this ordeal, my left breast and chest had a rash and the skin under my breast looked wrinkled and very thin. I started experiencing, burning/itchy and throbbing pain in my breasts to the point that I can't even where a bra because my breast hurt and are extremely sensitive to the slightest of touch. When the emergency room Dr. examined my breast at Palomar Hospital because I pointed out that I have breast implants and could they be causing all my physical problems? He said, " there's nothing they can do about it because they're not set up to handle implant breast problems and he referred me to a clinic to see a Internist who only handles AIDS patients. (Go Figure that referral) Lastly, a UCSC emergency room Dr. had a Female Plastic Surgeon examine me after looking at my cat scan and said, "I have a slight capsular contracture, and all the systems I've been experiencing over the past months had nothing to do with my implants because the latest studies have shown that silicone implants have no negative affect on your body. In desperation, and still very sick I looked up the Surgeon who originally put the implants in me and scheduled an appointment in LA for his consultation. He examined me, and to my amazement said the exact same thing that the UCSD Surgeon said, "implants don't cause the physical problems I'm experiencing". When I returned back to San Diego, I then went to a Scripps Urgent Care facility and the y referred me to a 3rd Surgeon who examined me and he asked, "Wat type of implants did I have put in?" I told him "Replicon" and he then stated "he believes that the problems I'm experiencing are due to the polyurethane coating on the implants and they need to come out but I should replace them with saline. Also he stated, "Did I know that the Government closed the Manufacture down who made the Replicon product?" Also, he said he didn't think in the year 2003 that anyone is still walking around with a Replicon Implant. Needless to say, I feel I've been through the trenches, and my health is not getting better, only worst. The real tragedy of all of this, I'm between jobs and I have no health insurance or the money to get them out. Through all the miss-diagnosis by Dr's, emergency room visits and high medical bills incurred, we've depleted all our extra cash. My husband's company does not provide medical, and prior to my getting sick....I was in the process of interviewing to find a job with medical benefits. I feel so scared, and I pray that my health doesn't get any worst...This whole ordeal is putting a strain on my marriage and my 9 year old daughter. If there's any advice or programs you know about, please share them with me. I have tried to apply for Medical, but the State would not help because they said my Husband is over the income range.
